Estimating emissions of methane consistent with atmospneric measurements of methane and δ13C of methane

Sourish Basu et al.

Summary: This study constructed an atmospheric inversion framework based on TM5-4DVAR to estimate global methane emissions for the period 1999-2016 by assimilating measurements of methane and delta C-13 of methane. It was found that traditional atmospheric inversions using CH4 data alone were unlikely to provide emission estimates consistent with delta C-13 data, highlighting the importance of assimilating delta C-13 data in emission estimations.

New contributions of measurements in Europe to the global inventory of the stable isotopic composition of methane

Malika Menoud et al.

Summary: This study provides a better method for estimating CH4 emission sources by measuring the isotope signatures of different sources and presents a new global database. The results indicate that microbial sources are well described, while there is significant variability in the isotope compositions of fossil fuel sources, requiring careful selection of weighting criteria.

CH4 isotopic signatures of emissions from oil and gas extraction sites in Romania

Malika Menoud et al.

Summary: Despite the European Union's goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the methane emissions from the oil and gas sector in Romania are highly uncertain. By measuring the isotopic composition of methane, we found that the main sources of methane in the Romanian Plain are thermogenic gas associated with oil production, as well as some natural gas reservoirs of microbial origin. The classification based on ethane and CH4 isotopes was consistent, confirming the interpretation of gas origin. Furthermore, we discovered that the average isotopic signatures of methane in Romania are significantly lower than the commonly used values for global fossil fuel emissions, emphasizing the importance of regional variations in methane isotopes for global modeling studies.

Coal seam gas industry methane emissions in the Surat Basin, Australia: comparing airborne measurements with inventories

Bruno G. Neininger et al.

Summary: Coal seam gas (CSG) accounts for a significant portion of natural gas production in Australia, and this study in the Surat Basin reveals that CSG methane emissions per unit of gas production are higher than previously estimated, indicating a need for further review and refinement of existing emission inventories. Prioritizing TD verification surveys could enhance global characterization of methane emissions.

Improved Constraints on Global Methane Emissions and Sinks Using δ13C-CH4

X. Lan et al.

Summary: The study investigated the drivers behind the global atmospheric methane increase after 2006 by simulating emission and sink scenarios in a tracer transport model. Fossil fuel emissions were unlikely to be the main driver for the post-2006 methane increase, and a decrease in hydroxyl radicals could not explain the observed increase. Different methane sinks have varying fractionation factors for delta C-13 methane, introducing uncertainty in the results.

Methane (CH4) sources in Krakow, Poland: insights from isotope analysis

Malika Menoud et al.

Summary: Human activities emitting methane (CH4) pose a threat to the current climate system, with a significant portion of European CH4 emissions originating from coal extraction in Poland's Upper Silesian Coal Basin. Utilizing isotopic composition allows for the differentiation of various CH4 sources, as demonstrated in Krakow where isotopic signatures helped distinguish between natural gas leaks, coal mine emissions, and other sources. Observations in Krakow also revealed regular nighttime CH4 accumulations and sporadic daytime pollution events. Model simulations suggested that current emission inventories underestimate pollution events, particularly from fuel combustion sources, indicating a need for improved emission estimates.

Effects of thallium exposure on intestinal microbial community and organ functions in zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Yuxuan Wang et al.

Summary: Thallium, a highly toxic trace metal widely present in water environments, was found to significantly alter the microbial community in the intestines of zebrafish. Exposure to high levels of thallium led to increased pathogenic bacteria in the intestines, as well as damage to gill and liver tissues, affecting mating behavior and survival of the fish. The study suggests that low doses of thallium in aquatic environments can be highly toxic to zebrafish, posing threats to their health and potential changes in microbial communities.

Attribution of the accelerating increase in atmospheric methane during 2010-2018 by inverse analysis of GOSAT observations

Yuzhong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study conducts a global inverse analysis of 2010-2018 GOSAT observations to understand the factors controlling atmospheric methane. The results show discrepancies in prior estimates of fuel-related emissions and significant growth in anthropogenic methane emissions in certain regions. This research also highlights the impact of low OH concentrations, high fire emissions, and wetland emissions on methane growth rates during 2010-2018.
