In lumpfish We Trust? The Efficacy of Lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus to Control Lepeophtheirus salmonis Infestations on Farmed Atlantic Salmon: A Review

Albert Kjartan Dagbjartarson Imsland et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the effectiveness of using lumpfish as cleaner fish to control Lepeophtheirus salmonis infestations on farmed Atlantic salmon. The data clearly indicate that lumpfish can actively graze on lice and significantly lower their burden on salmon. The grazing behavior of lumpfish is size dependent and can be enhanced through conditioning and selective breeding. Observations from large-scale farming also support the effectiveness of using lumpfish to reduce lice infestations.

Development, validation and testing of an Operational Welfare Score Index for farmed lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus L.

C. Gutierrez Rabadan et al.

Summary: The study introduced a Lumpfish Operational Welfare Score Index (LOWSI) to assess the welfare of lumpfish quickly and accurately. Most lumpfish displayed good welfare, but a small percentage had weight issues and risk of emaciation.

Quantification of grazing efficacy, growth and health score of different lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) families: Possible size and gender effects

Albert Kjartan Dagbjartarson Imsland et al.

Summary: This study found significant differences in sea lice grazing efficacy, growth, and cataract prevalence among different families of lumpfish. Smaller lumpfish demonstrated higher potential for sea lice grazing, with family and paternal effects influencing this behavior. The results suggest that selective breeding programs targeting specific families could enhance sea lice grazing of L. salmonis and C. elongatus.
