Fabrication of self-antibacterial chitosan/oxidized starch polyelectrolyte complex sponges for controlled delivery of curcumin

Ecaterina Stela Dragan et al.

Summary: In this study, novel porous polyelectrolyte complexes (PECs) were presented, which were physically stabilized by the electrostatic interaction between chitosan (CS) and oxidized starch from different sources. Two different strategies were employed for the preparation of PEC sponges, and the properties and stability of the PECs were found to be influenced by the preparation strategy and starch origin. The OxRS-based PECs exhibited faster release of curcumin compared to OxPS-based PECs. Furthermore, the PEC sponges showed antibacterial properties associated with the presence of CS and oxidized starch.

Dual crosslinked pullulan-gelatin cryogel scaffold for chondrocyte-mediated cartilage repair: synthesis, characterization and in vitro evaluation

Resmi Anand et al.

Summary: Cryogels have recently attracted attention in cartilage tissue engineering. In this study, a dual crosslinked pullulan-gelatin cryogel scaffold was synthesized and shown to promote chondrocyte proliferation, enhance production of cartilage-specific extracellular matrix, and up-regulate the expression of chondrogenic marker genes. These findings suggest that the PDAG scaffold has potential applications in cartilage tissue engineering.

Iminoboronate-chitooligosaccharides hydrogels with strong antimicrobial activity for biomedical applications

Daniela Ailincai et al.

Summary: The paper discusses the preparation and characterization of hydrogels from chitooligosaccharides crosslinked with 2-formylphenylboronicacid, showing promising properties in terms of biodegradability and antimicrobial activity. The results indicate that hydrogels with lower polymerization degrees exhibit higher biodegradation rates and remarkable antimicrobial properties against various strains. Further in vivo and in vitro biocompatibility tests on experimental mice demonstrate no cytotoxic effects, highlighting the potential applications of these hydrogels in the biomedical field.

Chitosan crosslinking with a vanillin isomer toward self-healing hydrogels with antifungal activity

Manuela-Maria Iftime et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop new antimicrobial hydrogels from natural resources for promoting wound healing and preventing bacterial skin infection. The hydrogels were synthesized by crosslinking chitosan with a vanillin isomer through a simple and environmentally friendly method. Their structural and morphological properties were characterized by various techniques, and in vitro investigations were conducted on their swelling behavior, biodegradability, antimicrobial activity, and biocompatibility. The results showed that the new hydrogels had highly porous structures and controlled swelling rates, as well as strong antifungal properties. These findings suggest that the hydrogels have great potential for the treatment of various skin lesions.

Self-Healing Behavior of Polymer/Protein Hybrid Hydrogels

Maria Bercea

Summary: This paper presents the viscoelastic properties of new hybrid hydrogels containing PVA, HPC, BSA, and GSH. The hydrogels form a weak network due to partial BSA unfolding in the presence of GSH after heating. By applying freezing/thawing cycles, a stable porous network structure with elastic properties is designed, and the hydrogels exhibit self-healing abilities. The effects of BSA content, deformation, and temperature on the self-healing ability are discussed.

Self-Healing Chitosan Hydrogels: Preparation and Rheological Characterization

Anda Mihaela Craciun et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on the preparation of chitosan self-healing hydrogels as carriers for local drug delivery. Through varying the ratio of glucosamine units and aldehyde and the water content, 30 hydrogels were prepared using chitosan and pyridoxal 5-phosphate (P5P). The driving forces of hydrogelation, stability, degradability, and self-healing ability were evaluated through various measurements. The results suggest that chitosan crosslinking with pyridoxal 5-phosphate is a suitable method to obtain self-healing hydrogels with good mechanical properties, structural recovery, stability, and pH-controlled degradability.
