Epidemiology of pediatric chronic kidney disease/kidney failure: learning from registries and cohort studies

Ryoko Harada et al.

Summary: Pediatric CKD presents unique characteristics with CAKUT being the most common underlying disease. The incidence/prevalence of CKD in children varies globally, with hypertension and proteinuria identified as independent risk factors for CKD progression. Various factors such as age, sex, race/genetic factors, and urological problems may also affect the progression of CKD in children. Research based on registry data has provided insights into mortality risk factors among children with kidney failure, contributing to improved clinical practice and care for pediatric CKD.

Clinical Integration of Genome Diagnostics for Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract

Rik Westland et al.

Summary: Revolution in genetics, epigenetics, and bioinformatics is changing diagnostics and clinical medicine. CAKUT is a major cause of kidney failure in children and young adults, but its phenotypic and genotypic heterogeneity has hindered standardization of clinical decisions. Precision medicine offers integrated diagnostics, genetic counseling, and personalized management for CAKUT patients.

Trends in Procedures to Initiate Renal Replacement Therapy among People Living with Spina Bifida

Courtney S. Streur et al.

Summary: A study found that while chronic kidney disease is on the rise among individuals with spina bifida, there is no increase in end stage kidney disease. The frequency of surgeries to establish renal replacement therapy has actually decreased, with patients being young adults with a high prevalence of hypertension.

Renal Transplants Due to Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract (CAKUT) Have Better Graft Survival Than Non-CAKUT Controls: Analysis of Over 10,000 Patients

Laura B. Cornwell et al.

Summary: The study aimed to compare graft survival between CAKUT and non-CAKUT renal transplant patients. Results showed that CAKUT patients had better graft survival rates overall, with no significant difference in pediatric LUTM patients compared to controls.

Summary: The study evaluated the clinical utility of pre-renal transplant LUT investigations in pediatric populations, showing that LUT investigations following referral for renal transplantation did not significantly impact one-year clinical outcomes.

Molecular causes of congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT)

Stefan Kohl et al.

Summary: CAKUT is a common congenital anomaly of the kidney and urinary tract, which includes a variety of clinical conditions and can be either isolated or part of other syndromes. While most cases have a multifactorial etiology, up to 20% of patients may have a monogenic form of CAKUT.
