Nanoarchitectonics: what's coming next after nanotechnology?

Katsuhiko Ariga

Summary: The crucial importance of regulating nanoscale objects and structures in science and technology is well recognized, with the fusion of nanotechnology with other disciplines enabling the production of functional material systems using nanoscale units. The concept of nanoarchitectonics involves designing functional materials with nanoscale units based on nanotechnology principles, moving beyond the traditional scope of nanotechnology. Various examples of material production based on nanoarchitectonics, from atomic switches to life science applications, are introduced in this focus article, with discussions on the final goals of the nanoarchitectonics approach.
