Many-body localization transition with correlated disorder

Zhengyan Darius Shi et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate the critical properties of the many-body localization (MBL) phase transition in one-dimensional systems with spatially correlated disorder. Using a strong-randomness renormalization group (RG) framework, we analyze the transition and introduce disorder at the level of scaling variables. We find that anticorrelations in the disorder are generally irrelevant at the MBL transition, while positively correlated disorder modifies certain properties of the many-body localized phase.

Many-body localized to ergodic transitions in a system with correlated disorder

Abhisek Samanta et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transition from a many-body localized phase to an ergodic phase in a spin chain with correlated random magnetic fields. Multiple statistical measures are used to determine the phase diagram, and it is found that the transition occurs at higher correlation values with increasing disorder. The average of the sample variance of magnetic fields is identified as a parameter that encodes the effects of correlated disorder.

Challenges to observation of many-body localization

Piotr Sierant et al.

Summary: This study investigates the time dynamics of 1D disordered Heisenberg spin-1/2 chains and finds that the regime of slow power-law decay of imbalance persists even at disorder strengths exceeding the critical disorder strength for many-body localization (MBL). However, when the disorder is replaced by a quasiperiodic potential, an emergence of a stable pattern of imbalance oscillations is observed. The study highlights the challenges in experimentally observing MBL phenomenon.

Multifractality and self-averaging at the many-body localization transition

Andrei Solorzano et al.

Summary: Finite-size effects and lack of self-averaging are major concerns in studies of many-body localization. By considering a large number of samples for all system sizes, the generalized dimensions of eigenstates can be well described, providing an additional tool for research in this area.

Experimental characterization of the quantum many-body localization transition

Ming Gong et al.

Summary: As disorder strength exceeds a threshold value in many-body systems, a transformation known as many-body localization occurs, breaking down fundamental principles of statistical mechanics. Investigating the transition point remains challenging, but detecting it experimentally is possible by exploiting the sensitivity of dynamics to random samples, leaving fingerprints on all spatial scales. Additionally, evidence of a mobility edge can be detected by slight variations of the transition point with changes in the initial state, and the scalable protocol can be implemented across various physical platforms.
