High-throughput sequencing technologies in the detection of livestock pathogens, diagnosis, and zoonotic surveillance

Godagama Gamaarachchige Dinesh Suminda et al.

Summary: Globalization, agricultural intensification, urbanization, and climatic changes have led to an increase in emerging infectious zoonotic diseases. Innovative and effective research is needed to understand the transmission, ecological implications, and dynamics of these diseases at human-wildlife interfaces. High-throughput sequencing methodologies have the potential to improve detection and surveillance of zoonotic infections in livestock. This study investigates the current use of sequencing technologies and explores their potential for better infectious disease diagnosis and monitoring in farm animals.

Influence of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae natural infection on the respiratory microbiome diversity of finishing pigs

Karina Sonalio et al.

Summary: The study found that Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae infection affects the diversity of respiratory microbiota and facilitates colonization of other pathogens. Differences in pulmonary and nasal microbiota were observed in pigs with different infection statuses.

Oral vaccination of piglets against Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae using silica SBA-15 as an adjuvant effectively reduced consolidation lung lesions at slaughter

Marina L. Mechler-Dreibi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an oral vaccine against M. hyopneumoniae using a nanostructured mesoporous silica (SBA-15) as an adjuvant, and compare its effect with an intramuscular commercial vaccine (CV). Results showed that both oral immunization and intramuscular vaccination significantly reduced lung lesions caused by porcine enzootic pneumonia, with the oral vaccine inducing immune responses and demonstrating potential in controlling M. hyopneumoniae infection.

Co-infections by Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Mycoplasma hyorhinis and Mycoplasma flocculare in macroscopic lesions of lung consolidation of pigs at slaughter

Marcela Manduca Ferreira et al.

Summary: In this study, Mycoplasma infections in slaughter pigs in Brazil were quantified, revealing correlations between the degree of infection with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Mycoplasma flocculare and the severity of macroscopic lung consolidation lesions. Co-infections of Mycoplasma flocculare and Mycoplasma hyorhinis were also found to be positively correlated with the extent of lung lesions. Additionally, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae exhibited inhibitory behavior towards Mycoplasma flocculare, suggesting a competitive relationship between them.
