Applications of the regenerative capacity of platelets in modern medicine

Elibieta Cecerska-Heryc et al.

Summary: Platelets produce growth factors that play a crucial role in wound healing. Platelet-rich plasma has been widely used in dentistry, sports medicine, dermatology, gynecology, ophthalmology, and neurology. However, further research is needed to better understand its potential and standardize its clinical application.

Summary: This study compared the ability of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and cord blood PRP (PRPc) to accelerate bone healing. The results showed similar bone consolidation between PRP and PRPc treatments, suggesting that PRPc is a valid alternative when clinical conditions discourage the use of autologous blood derivates.

Umbilical Cord PRP vs. Autologous PRP for the Treatment of Hip Osteoarthritis

Alessandro Mazzotta et al.

Summary: This study compared the safety and clinical efficacy of umbilical cord platelet-rich plasma (C-PRP) and autologous PRP (A-PRP) injections for the treatment of hip osteoarthritis (OA) patients. The results showed that C-PRP injections were safe but only provided short-term clinical improvement. The overall comparative analysis did not demonstrate benefits compared with A-PRP, but excluding advanced OA cases, C-PRP showed more benefits.

Platelet-rich plasma injections for hip osteoarthritis: a review of the evidence

Mark Berney et al.

Summary: Based on a systematic review of literature, while platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections have shown improvements in patient outcome scores at follow-up at 6 and 12 months in the treatment of hip osteoarthritis, there was no significant difference compared to treatment with hyaluronic acid alone. Currently, the use of intra-articular PRP injections for hip osteoarthritis cannot be recommended. Further studies comparing PRP to steroid injections would be beneficial to determine the value of PRP injections in hip osteoarthritis.
