Three-Dimensional Surface Displacements of the 8 January 2022 Mw6.7 Menyuan Earthquake, China from Sentinel-1 and ALOS-2 SAR Observations

Jihong Liu et al.

Summary: This study used SAR data to investigate the surface displacement and strain characteristics of the 2022 Menyuan earthquake, revealing that it was dominated by left-lateral slip and had larger fault-parallel displacement on the southern side. It also identified a severely deformed near-fault area and clearly expanding and compressed zones.

Strain Partitioning on the Western Haiyuan Fault System Revealed by the Adjacent 2016 Mw5.9 and 2022 Mw6.7 Menyuan Earthquakes

Heng Luo et al.

Summary: Using synthetic aperture radar images, researchers investigated the fault geometries and slip distributions of the adjacent 2016 M(w)5.9 and 2022 M(w)6.7 Menyuan earthquakes along the Haiyuan fault system. The findings suggest that strain was released separately on different fault planes, indicating strain partitioning. This partitioning is likely controlled by the ratio between interseismic shear and normal velocities and the fault structure beneath the Lenglongling segment. Consideration of seismic hazard due to both focal mechanisms is necessary along the western Haiyuan fault in northeastern Tibet.

High-precision relocation of the aftershock sequence of the January 8, 2022, MS6.9 Menyuan earthquake

Liping Fan et al.

Summary: The 2022 Menyuan MS6.9 earthquake is the most destructive earthquake near the Lenglongling fault since 2016. The aftershocks are mainly concentrated at a depth of 7-12 km, and the aftershock sequence can be divided into two segments with different fault structures. The mainshock occurred at the conjunction of the TLS fault and LLL fault according to the surface traces and distribution of the earthquake sequence.

Sentinel-1 InSAR observations of co- and post-seismic deformation mechanisms of the 2016 Mw 5.9 Menyuan Earthquake, Northwestern China

Wei Qu et al.

Summary: The 5.9 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Menyuan, Qinghai Province in 2016 was triggered by a concomitant buried reverse fault in the northeastern part of the area. This event had significant effects on the surrounding regions and post-seismic deformation.
