The role of interfacial friction on the peeling of thin viscoelastic tapes

M. Ceglie et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the peeling behavior of viscoelastic tape is influenced by either perfect adhesion or frictional sliding conditions, with the latter being more dependent on the peeling velocity. Low-angle peeling results in a tougher peeling behavior compared to traditional stuck cases, in line with the locomotion control mechanisms of certain biological systems.

Size effects in adhesive contacts of viscoelastic media

G. Violano et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the maximum force required to detach a rigid sphere from a viscoelastic substrate and the initial value of the contact radius. The results show that, under quasi-static conditions, the pull-off force is independent of the maximum contact radius. However, size-dependent effects are observed when transient effects occur.

Cartilage rehydration: The sliding-induced hydrodynamic triggering mechanism

Carmine Putignano et al.

Summary: Joint motion ensures adequate hydration and excellent mechanical properties of cartilage tissues. By developing a numerical multiscale lubrication theory and corroborating it with experiments, the study provides the first original theoretical explanation to the motion-induced cartilage rehydration mechanism, which is crucial for understanding joint physiology and informing the design of cartilage-mimicking biomaterials.

Exploring the effect of geometric coupling on friction and energy dissipation in rough contacts of elastic and viscoelastic coatings

N. Menga et al.

Summary: The study found that even purely elastic thin coatings can experience additional friction due to normal-tangential coupling, and that viscoelastic coatings may exhibit enhanced friction and larger bulk energy dissipation as a result of coupling. Geometric coupling also leads to increased contact area compared to uncoupled contacts, especially involving significantly stiffer substrate.

Rate-dependent adhesion of viscoelastic contacts, Part I: Contact area and contact line velocity within model randomly rough surfaces

G. Violano et al.

Summary: In this study, dissipative effects during the detachment of a smooth spherical glass probe from a viscoelastic silicone substrate patterned with micro-asperities were investigated using experiments and modeling. The results show that scaling laws for contact radius and contact line velocity can be established through pull-off experiments on substrates with different height distributions of micro-asperities.

Rate-dependent adhesion of viscoelastic contacts. Part II: Numerical model and hysteresis dissipation

G. Violano et al.

Summary: The numerical model proposed in this paper describes the adhesive normal contact between a glass spherical indenter and a viscoelastic model rough substrate of PDMS material, taking into account dissipative processes and localized viscoelastic losses at contact lines. The model successfully explains the strong adhesion hysteresis observed in experimental measurements, which is mainly attributed to viscous dissipation occurring during pull-off. The detachment force is found to be influenced by the detachment rate and roughness amplitude, rather than by the maximum load from which unloading starts.

Critical thresholds for mode-coupling instability in viscoelastic sliding contacts

Antonio Papangelo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conditions for mode-coupling instability in the contact between a spherical oscillator and a moving viscoelastic substrate, taking into account various factors such as viscoelastic dissipation, adhesive friction, and nonlinear normal contact stiffness. The stability of the system is shown to depend on externally imposed parameters and contact parameters, such as substrate velocity, normal load applied, shear strength, and viscoelastic friction coefficient. The critical shear strength and normal load that trigger mode-coupling instability are identified, indicating that self-excited vibrations can be expected under certain conditions.
