Quantum many-body scars and Hilbert space fragmentation: a review of exact results

Sanjay Moudgalya et al.

Summary: This review provides a pedagogical introduction to and an overview of the exact results on weak ergodicity breaking via quantum many-body scars (QMBS) in isolated quantum systems. Various mechanisms and unifying formalisms for systems exhibiting QMBS are discussed, along with the connections to Hilbert space fragmentation.

Field-tuned ferroquadrupolar quantum phase transition in the insulator TmVO4

Pierre Massat et al.

Summary: We report the results of measurements on TmVO4, an insulator that undergoes a continuous phase transition. Through tuning the magnetic field, we observe quantum fluctuations at high magnetic fields and find that the crystal lattice plays a crucial role in the interactions and critical behavior. Our findings have important implications for understanding quantum criticality in insulators.

Emergence of Hilbert Space Fragmentation in Ising Models with a Weak Transverse Field

Atsuki Yoshinaga et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate for the first time the breakdown of ergodicity in d-dimensional Ising models with a weak transverse field in a prethermal regime. We show that the novel Hilbert-space fragmentation occurs as a consequence of the emergent global conservation law of the domain wall number in the effective nonintegrable model with d >= 2.

Disorder-Free Localization in an Interacting 2D Lattice Gauge Theory

P. Karpov et al.

Summary: The concept of disorder-free localization as a mechanism for ergodicity breaking in low-dimensional homogeneous lattice gauge theories is introduced in this study. Surprisingly, nonergodic behavior can also be observed in genuinely interacting systems in two spatial dimensions due to this mechanism. Furthermore, the study shows that the gauge invariance can act as an alternative robust localization mechanism surviving in higher dimensions in the presence of interactions.

Quantum many-body scars and weak breaking of ergodicity

Maksym Serbyn et al.

Summary: Thermalization is the inevitable fate of many complex quantum systems, but recent discoveries have shown the existence of a new type of behavior called quantum many-body scarring, where the system rapidly relaxes for most initial conditions, yet certain initial states display non-ergodic dynamics. This phenomenon, similar to scars observed in single-particles in specific potentials, has potential applications in quantum technology.

Minimal model for Hilbert space fragmentation with local constraints

Bhaskar Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The study reveals extensive fragmentation of the Hilbert space in this model, leading to a breakdown of thermalization despite the nonintegrable nature of the Hamiltonian. Different types of anomalous eigenstates are discussed, as well as the consequences of adding a magnetic field and a PXP term to the model.

Emergent symmetries and slow quantum dynamics in a Rydberg-atom chain with confinement

I-Chi Chen et al.

Summary: The study examines the characteristics of the PXP model in a strong staggered external field and identifies a second emergent symmetry specific to this model. The interaction between these emergent symmetries and the Rydberg blockade constraint significantly slows down the system's dynamics, requiring a nested Schrieffer-Wolff perturbation theory to properly account for this new symmetry.
