Terrestrial venomous animals, the envenomings they cause, and treatment perspectives in the Middle East and North Africa

Timothy P. Jenkins et al.

Summary: The MENA region is home to a variety of venomous animals that cause a significant health burden, with scorpion stings being more common and contributing more to this burden than snakebites. Despite the existence of various antivenoms, few are clinically validated and their high cost and limited availability pose a substantial challenge to public health. Further research and policy efforts are needed to prioritize and develop effective therapeutic solutions for envenomings in the region.

Scorpion species of medical importance in the Brazilian Amazon: a review to identify knowledge gaps

Jonas Gama Martins et al.

Summary: Scorpionism is a significant medical concern in Brazil, particularly in the Northern Region where there has been a notable increase in incidence. Studies have shown that populations of medically important scorpions in the Brazilian Amazon may exhibit significant toxic variations even within the same species. Commercial scorpion antivenoms have not proven effective in reducing the intensity and duration of neurological symptoms in patients stung by certain species of scorpions in the region.
