Second Chern crystals with inherently non-trivial topology

Xiao-Dong Chen et al.

Summary: We propose a second Chern crystal in a four-dimensional parameter space by introducing two extra synthetic translation dimensions. The topology of the bulk bands in the synthetic translation space is intrinsically non-trivial, guaranteeing the topological non-triviality of the crystal regardless of its configuration. Through dimension reduction, we derive topologically protected modes on the lower dimensional boundaries and observe one-dimensional gapless dislocation modes in experiments.

Four-band non-Abelian topological insulator and its experimental realization

Tianshu Jiang et al.

Summary: The study presents two new classes of topological charges for four-band non-Abelian topological insulators, revealing significant differences in non-Abelian topological classification for even-band systems. The research illustrates the evolution of bulk topology and edge state distributions in a four-band PT symmetric system, paving the way for further exploration of even-band systems.

Realization of Second-Order Photonic Square-Root Topological Insulators

Wenchao Yan et al.

Summary: This research experimentally demonstrates second-order square-root higher-order topological insulators in photonics for the first time, revealing unique corner states on a specific platform. The observation of localized corner states in different bandgaps with characteristic phase structures provides insights into fundamental topological phenomena in systems with the coexistence of spin-1/2 and spin-1 Dirac-Weyl Fermions.

Theory of topological corner state laser in Kagome waveguide arrays

Hua Zhong et al.

Summary: In comparison with conventional lasers, topological lasers are more robust and can be immune to disorder or defects if lasing occurs in topologically protected states. Lasing can be achieved in the zero-dimensional corner state in a second-order photonic topological insulator based on the Kagome waveguide array with a rhombic configuration. Having gain in the corner of the structure can lead to stable lasing with the lowest possible threshold, while lasing in edge or bulk states require larger thresholds and transition to stable lasing occurs over larger propagation distances.

Experimental observation of non-Abelian topological charges and edge states

Qinghua Guo et al.

Summary: Experimental observation of non-Abelian topological charges and edge states in a PT-symmetric transmission line network, along with the discovery of a non-Abelian quotient relation for the bulk-edge correspondence. Experimental observation of non-Abelian topological acoustic semimetals and their phase transitions

Bin Jiang et al.

Summary: The research explores non-Abelian band topology in acoustic semimetals using a tunable kagome model, demonstrating topological transitions induced by controlling the geometry of metamaterials and the braiding of different band nodes. The study reveals the underlying rules for the conversion and transfer of non-Abelian topological charges in multiple bandgaps, providing insights for studies on multi-band topological semimetals and out-of-equilibrium systems.

Exact higher-order bulk-boundary correspondence of corner-localized states

Minwoo Jung et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that the presence of a localized state at the corner of an insulating domain is not always related to a certain nontrivial higher-order topological invariant, despite appearing in the same Hamiltonian parameter space. Topological corner states may not be correlated with other well-established higher-order boundary observables, motivating further development for associating corner state existence with the higher-order topology of host materials.

Graphyne as a second-order and real Chern topological insulator in two dimensions

Cong Chen et al.

Summary: Higher-order and real topological phases are emerging topics in the field of topological states of matter, with graphyne identified as a 2D second-order topological insulator and real Chern insulator. The unique properties of graphyne, including double band inversion and three valleys, are characterized by a real Chern number enabled by spacetime-inversion symmetry. Topological corner states are found to exist in graphyne, with a topological phase transition to a trivial insulator mediated by a 2D Weyl semimetal phase. The robustness of corner states against symmetry breaking and possible experimental detection methods are also discussed.
