Stimulation mechanism and design of enhanced geothermal systems: A comprehensive review

S. Li et al.

Summary: This work provides a comprehensive review of fracture stimulation in enhanced geothermal systems, including hydraulic stimulation mechanisms, design strategies, and measurement tools. It compares the impacts of different hydraulic stimulation mechanisms on the performance of enhanced geothermal systems and analyzes the hydraulic stimulation design strategies in 19 representative projects worldwide. The difference between hydraulic stimulation operations in geothermal reservoirs and those in oil/gas fields is clarified, aiming to provide useful guidelines for both theoretical research and field operations.

A regenerative Enhanced Geothermal System for heat and electricity production as well as energy storage

Muhammad Haris et al.

Summary: This study proposed an innovative concept of Enhanced Geothermal Systems (EGS) that integrates heat and electricity production with the storage of surplus renewable energy. Numerical simulations and coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) modeling were performed to investigate the evolution of fluid and heat transmissivity and optimize thermal production. The results showed a decrease in electric potential and the Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE), indicating the economic feasibility of the proposed EGS, and suggested several schemes for energy storage to extend the life of geothermal power plants.

Thermodynamic, economic, and environmental performance comparison of typical geothermal power generation systems driven by hot dry rock

Tailu Li et al.

Summary: This paper examines four power generation systems suitable for low dryness hot dry rock geothermal fluid and analyzes their matching characteristics under different temperature and dryness conditions. The results show that the temperature of hot dry rock geothermal fluid is positively correlated with the power generation performance, economic performance, and environmental benefits of the systems. The double stage flash combined organic Rankine cycle system performs best in terms of power generation performance and environmental benefits.

Fluid and heat flow in enhanced geothermal systems considering fracture geometrical and topological complexities: An extended embedded discrete fracture model

Shuai Zheng et al.

Summary: The paper proposes an extended embedded discrete fracture model (XEDFM) for simulating fluid and heat flow in fractured reservoirs with 3-D non-planar fracture networks, which offers more flexibility and advantages compared to conventional models. By systematically validating XEDFM, the study investigates the impacts of fracture roughness and heat extraction strategy on hydrothermal behaviors and heat mining efficiency.

A comparative study and sensitivity analysis of different ORC configurations for waste heat recovery

Rania Zhar et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of three different Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) configurations from both thermodynamic and economic perspectives, with REG-ORC showing the best energy efficiency and minimal exergy destruction among the analyzed ORCs. Economic evaluation based on payback period and LCOE reveals close similarity among the examined ORC configurations. Sensitivity analysis identifies the economic parameters that have the most influence on the system's economics.
