Chiral Selenide/Achiral Sulfonic Acid Cocatalyzed Atroposelective Sulfenylation of Biaryl Phenols via a Desymmetrization/Kinetic Resolution Sequence

Hui-Yun Luo et al.

Summary: The enantioselective synthesis of axially chiral sulfur-containing biaryl derivatives through electrophilic sulfenylation of biaryl phenols has been achieved for the first time. The reaction is facilitated by a novel 3,3'-disubstituted BINOL-derived selenide catalyst and an achiral sulfonic acid. Control experiments and computational studies demonstrate that multiple noncovalent interactions, particularly a network of hydrogen bond interactions, play a crucial role in determining enantioselectivity and reactivity.

Chiral Lewis Base Catalyzed Enantioselective Selenocyclization of 1,1-Disubstituted Alkenes: Asymmetric Synthesis of Selenium-Containing 4H-3,1-Benzoxazines

Ren-Fei Cao et al.

Summary: An enantioselective selenocyclization of 1,1-disubstituted alkenes was achieved for the first time using a novel combination of a chiral BINAM-derived sulfide and an achiral Lewis acid. Various selenium-containing 4H-3,1-benzoxazines, which are found in many medicinally relevant molecules, were synthesized in moderate to good yields and good to excellent enantioselectivities. The reaction also facilitated the construction of tetrasubstituted carbon stereocenters.

Chiral Selenide-Catalyzed, Highly Regio- and Enantioselective Intermolecular Thioarylation of Alkenes with Phenols

Yuanyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: The enantioselective electrophilic three-component thioarylation of alkenes using chiral selenide catalysis with free phenols as arylating sources has been disclosed. Various chiral phenols were obtained in high regio-, enantio-, and diastereoselectivities. Mechanistic studies showed that the transformation proceeded through carbon nucleophilic attack to give the products rather than the intramolecular rearrangement of phenolic ether intermediates.

Recent Advances in Catalytic Asymmetric Construction of Atropisomers

Jun Kee Cheng et al.

Summary: Atropisomerism is a stereochemical behavior exhibited by three-dimensional molecules with rotationally restricted sigma bonds, and compounds with atropisomerically chiral properties are increasingly utilized in fields where molecular asymmetry is influential. There is a steady demand for atroposelective synthesis, leading to conceptually novel and streamlined methods for expanding the structural diversity of atropisomers. This review summarizes key achievements in the stereoselective preparation of biaryl, heterobiaryl, and nonbiaryl atropisomers between 2015 and 2020, emphasizing synthetic strategies for each structural class and potential applications of atropochiral targets.

Efficient Synthesis of P-Chirogenic Compounds Enabled by Chiral Selenide-Catalyzed Enantioselective Electrophilic Aromatic Halogenation

Ruizhi Guo et al.

Summary: This study presents a convenient and efficient method to construct valuable P-chirogenic compounds through chiral selenide-catalyzed enantioselective electrophilic aromatic halogenation. The new chiral bifunctional selenide catalyst successfully converted various bis(2-hydroxyaryl) aryl phosphine oxides into chlorinated and brominated P-chirogenic compounds with good enantioselectivities. By adjusting the catalyst and solvent, the method could also prepare chiral alkyl diaryl phosphine oxides and diaryl phosphinates.

Atroposelective transformation of axially chiral (hetero)biaryls. From desymmetrization to modern resolution strategies

Jose A. Carmona et al.

Summary: This tutorial review provides a comprehensive overview of methodologies available for the atroposelective transformation of (heterobiaryl)biaryl precursors towards enantiomerically enriched products and discusses the conceptual aspects associated with each type of transformation. Several strategies have been developed based on the presence or absence of symmetry in the starting material and the occurrence of racemization or dynamicization events, including desymmetrization, classical kinetic resolution (KR), dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR), and dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation (DYKAT). Seminal contributions and selected examples are discussed to highlight the potential of these synthetic tools.
