Inverse probability weighting to handle attrition in cohort studies: some guidance and a call for caution

Marie-Astrid Metten et al.

Summary: The study compared the IPW method with complete-case analysis (CCA) for nine response-mechanism scenarios, finding that the IPW method was equivalent to CCA in terms of bias and consistently less efficient in all scenarios. It was concluded that the most effective response model included only the confounding factors of the association model.

Strategies to Enhance Retention in a Cohort Study Among Adults of Turkish Descent Living in Berlin

Christina Dornquast et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that retention rates among adults of Turkish descent can be significantly increased through additional levels of contact, particularly through home visits. Participants were more likely to be non-smokers and German citizens compared to non-participants.

Statistical Analysis in the German National Cohort (NAKO) - Specific Aspects and General Recommendations

Oliver Kuss et al.

Summary: The German National Cohort (NAKO) is a prospective multicenter cohort study that aims to investigate the impact of various factors on the health of a population. It has recruited over 205,000 participants aged 19-74 years, and the study's data will be accessible for global research. This paper provides a harmonized approach to the statistical analyses in NAKO, discussing specific aspects of the study and offering general recommendations applicable to other large cohort studies.

Prevalence, Comorbidity, and Sociodemographic Correlates of Psychiatric Disorders Reported in the All of Us Research Program

Peter B. Barr et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the prevalence, comorbidity, and sociodemographic correlates of psychiatric disorders in the All of Us biobank. The results showed overlapping among different psychiatric disorders, with most participants having 2 or more diagnoses. Prevalence varied across demographic categories, with certain groups at greater risk for disorders.

Factors associated with participation over time in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children: a study using linked education and primary care data

Rosie P. Cornish et al.

Summary: This study found that factors such as lower levels of school attainment, lower general practitioner consultation and prescription rates, higher body mass index, special educational needs, absence of an asthma diagnosis, depression, and smoking were associated with lower ongoing participation in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children. The study also demonstrated that the association between maternal smoking and certain outcomes differed slightly between the subsample of participants at 19 years and the entire sample, but the differences were minimal and confidence intervals overlapped. Researchers need to consider these health-related and educational factors when planning their analysis in cohort studies.

Ethnic Differences in Dementia Risk: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Suhail Ismail Shiekh et al.

Summary: This study examined ethnic differences in dementia risk based on published observational studies. The risk ratio for dementia incidence comparing Black and White ethnic groups was 1.33, while it was 0.86 for Asian and White ethnic groups. There was no difference in dementia incidence between Latino and White ethnic groups.

Genetic predictors of participation in optional components of UK Biobank

Jessica Tyrrell et al.

Summary: This study investigated genetic factors affecting participation in large studies such as the UK Biobank, finding that some participation factors may have underlying genetic components. Genetic correlations showed that participation bias is common across studies. Mendelian randomization revealed that factors such as educational duration and certain health conditions can influence participation rates.

Examining the municipal-level representativeness of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) cohort: an analysis using Calgary participant baseline data

Samantha J. Norberg et al.

Summary: The study found that Calgary CLSA participants represented the general Calgary population in terms of age, sex, and Indigenous identity, but showed significant discrepancies in marital status, ethnic diversity, internal migration, income, retirement status, and education. Voluntary studies face challenges in recruiting fully representative cohorts.

The changing landscape of atherosclerosis

Peter Libby

Summary: Emerging evidence has led to a significant evolution of concepts related to atherosclerosis, with a shifting risk profile that is no longer limited to specific regions or demographics. Recent research has highlighted new risk factors and mechanisms underlying atherosclerosis, opening doors to potential therapeutic interventions for this widespread disease.

Genetic analyses identify widespread sex-differential participation bias

Nicola Pirastu et al.

Summary: Genetic analyses have revealed widespread sex-differential participation bias in population-based studies, potentially leading to incorrect inferences; the study demonstrated artifactual autosomal heritability of sex in the presence of sex-differential participation bias; through conducting a genome-wide association study contrasting one subgroup versus another, it is possible to estimate comparative biases.

Cognitive profiles in older males and females

C. Jockwitz et al.

Summary: This study examines the cognitive profiles of older adults with differences in processing strategies between males and females. Results show that there are different cognitive components in males and females, with females exhibiting a better model fit. Females have a decomposed cognitive profile while males have a holistic profile, showing more interrelations between different cognitive functions.
