Shrimp and microplastics: A case study with the Atlantic ditch shrimp Palaemon varians

Reinhard Saborowski et al.

Summary: This study illustrates the processes that occur in the Atlantic ditch shrimp upon ingestion of microplastics, showing that the shrimp have efficient mechanisms to protect their organs from the accumulation of microplastics and other indigestible particles.

Trace elements (Al, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in Mytilus galloprovincialis and Tapes decussatus from Faro and Ganzirri Lakes (Sicily, Italy): Flow cytometry applied for hemocytes analysis

Vincenzo Parrino et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the trace metal content of two sessile crustaceans in lakes of Sicily, Italy, and found significant differences in metal concentrations in different water bodies and tissues of the animals. The activation of immune responses in specific cell types was also observed, indicating the potential impact of bioaccumulation of metals in these molluscs on their immune systems.

Microplastics in freshwater fishes: Occurrence, impacts and future perspectives

Ben Parker et al.

Summary: Microplastics, small plastic particles found in various shapes and sizes, are commonly ingested by freshwater fishes, with ingestion patterns related to individual traits and environmental factors. Controlled exposure studies show complex effects on fish physiology, biochemistry, and behavior, with rapid egestion processes. Future research should focus on interactions of microplastic pollution with other stressors and its impact at different ecological levels.

Microplastics and the functional traits of fishes: A global meta-analysis

Martina Salerno et al.

Summary: Research has shown that microplastics have a negative impact on the functional traits of fish, particularly in terms of feeding, behavior, and growth. Different factors such as species, life stage, microplastic shape, and exposure time can affect the extent of the impact of microplastics on fish.

Traces of tramadol in water impact behaviour in a native European fish

Maria Eugenia Sancho Santos et al.

Summary: The study found that European chubs exposed to tramadol exhibit behaviors similar to anti-anxiety effects, which are correlated with the concentration of tramadol in the brain tissue. This alteration persists after the exposure phase, while the boldness effect disappears.

The Role of Behavioral Ecotoxicology in Environmental Protection

Alex T. Ford et al.

Summary: Chemicals have long been acknowledged to impact human and wildlife behavior. Recent technological advancements have highlighted the adverse effects of contaminants on organismal behavior and ecological outcomes. Concerns about the lack of consideration of behavior in regulatory ecotoxicology have led to the exclusion of many studies from chemical risk assessments. A workshop with international representatives has resulted in consensus perspectives and recommendations to improve the integration of basic and translational sciences with regulatory practices.

A preliminary study of the association between colonization of microorganism on microplastics and intestinal microbiota in shrimp under natural conditions

Muting Yan et al.

Summary: This study identified microplastics pollution in shrimp ponds and Litopenaeus vannamei for the first time, and investigated the association between colonization of microorganisms on microplastics and intestinal microbiota under natural conditions. Results suggest that impacts on the intestinal microbiota induced by microplastics may be due to the biofilm on their surfaces, causing notable effects on aquatic animals.
