The role of mitochondria in the pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease

Mikayla A. Beckley et al.

Summary: Kawasaki disease is a systemic vasculitis that affects children, particularly the coronary arteries. This study proposes that mitochondria, which serve as a central hub for energy generation and cellular processes, may play a critical role in the amplified inflammatory response seen in Kawasaki disease. Mitochondrial dysfunction alters immune cell activity and may contribute to the pathogenesis of the disease. Additionally, population-specific variants in mitochondrial DNA may explain racial disparities in disease risk and treatment response.
