Science goals and new mission concepts for future exploration of Titan's atmosphere, geology and habitability: titan POlar scout/orbitEr and in situ lake lander and DrONe explorer (POSEIDON)

Sebastien Rodriguez et al.

Summary: In response to ESA's Voyage 2050 announcement, the proposed POSEIDON mission aims to explore Saturn's largest moon, Titan, through joint orbital and in situ investigations. The mission aims to exceed the accomplishments of the Cassini-Huygens mission and explore Titan's northern latitudes in complement with NASA's upcoming Dragonfly mission. The ideal arrival time at Titan would be slightly before the next northern Spring equinox in 2039.

Diverse evolution of mountains and hummocks on Titan as observed by the Cassini RADAR altimeter

D. E. Lalich et al.

Summary: The formation and evolution of mountains on Titan remain poorly understood due to a lack of high-resolution topographic data. By increasing the resolution of the Cassini RADAR altimeter, we found that mountain elevations on Titan vary greatly over short distances, with many mountain ranges eroded down to the plains level.

Geomorphological map of the South Belet Region of Titan

Ashley M. Schoenfeld et al.

Summary: In this study, the detailed mapping of Titan's South Belet region revealed four major terrain classes and introduced two new terrain units previously not identified in studies. Analysis of the geological features of South Belet suggests the dominance of organics, similar to the equatorial and mid-latitude regions of Titan. The latitudinal symmetry observed between the mapping of the South Belet and Afekan regions indicates common surface processes and their evolution on Titan.

Physical-based scattering model for Titan: Integrating Cassini microwave data (active and passive)

F. Grings et al.

Summary: The study utilizes Cassini's microwave data to analyze the physical properties of Titan's surface, proposing a two-layered structure to explain backscattering and emissivity values of various geomorphic units. The physically-based models successfully estimate the composition and structure of the surface through simulations of microwave signals.

Titan: Earth-like on the Outside, Ocean World on the Inside

Shannon M. MacKenzie et al.

Summary: Titan, revealed to be a dynamic, hydrologically shaped, organic-rich ocean world by the Cassini-Huygens mission, offers unparalleled opportunities to explore prebiotic chemistry. Future exploration of Titan will address some of the most compelling planetary science questions of the next decade.
