Validation of Cognitive Load During Inquiry-Based Learning With Multimedia Scaffolds Using Subjective Measurement and Eye Movements

Marit Kastaun et al.

Summary: This work investigates the valid measurement of cognitive load (CL) and different scaffolds to reduce it during scientific inquiry experimentation, using subjective measurement instruments and eye-tracking metrics. The results show a significant decrease in CL with higher grade levels, with cognitive-visual and verbal abilities having a significant influence on extraneous and germane cognitive load. Additionally, there is a correlation between representation preference and different types of cognitive load. Eye-tracking metrics, such as absolute fixation numbers, are predictive for extraneous cognitive load.

A systematic map of research characteristics in studies on augmented reality and cognitive load

Josef Buchner et al.

Summary: This paper presents results from a systematic review of research on Augmented Reality (AR) with a special focus on cognitive load (CL). A total of 64 studies from 2007 to 2019 were analyzed, showing a steady increase in publications on AR and CL. Most studies are conducted by multidisciplinary teams, with a focus on quantitative research methods using experimental designs. The examination of AR mainly focuses on different components, with assistance systems and instructional materials being the most common.
