Assessment of heavy metal and metalloid levels and screening potential of tropical plant species for phytoremediation in Singapore

Yamin Wang et al.

Summary: Heavy metal and metalloid contamination in urban soils is a common problem. This study investigated the levels of 12 heavy metals and metalloids in soil and their accumulation by plant foliage in nature parks and industrial sites in Singapore. The results showed that certain tropical plant species have the potential to remediate contaminated lands.

Speciation of heavy metals in soils and their immobilization at micro-scale interfaces among diverse soil components

Qi Li et al.

Summary: Soil heavy metal pollution is a globally important ecological and environmental problem. Previous studies have explored the pollution sources, adsorption capacity, and distribution of heavy metals, as well as the phyto-uptake and ecotoxicity of heavy metals. However, there is a lack of systematic reviews on heavy metal pollution in soil-plant systems in the past decade. Understanding the mechanisms of interaction between heavy metals and solid soil components is crucial for effectively controlling and remediating heavy metal pollution.

Heavy Metals in Soils From Intense Industrial Areas in South China: Spatial Distribution, Source Apportionment, and Risk Assessment

Chuanghong Su et al.

Summary: The present study investigated the heavy metal pollution in soils from an area with intensive industrial activities in South China. The results showed that the concentrations of Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn were higher than background levels in both surface and subsurface soils. The primary sources of heavy metals were identified as agriculture, industry, transportation, and nature. Anthropogenic activities significantly influenced the spatial distribution of heavy metals in soils. The health risks of heavy metal exposure via different routes were found to be at an unacceptable level, with higher risks for adults compared to children. Therefore, monitoring heavy metal pollution in soils in rapidly developing areas, such as South China, is of great importance.

Assessing the future trends of soil trace metal contents in French urban gardens

Xueqian Zhong et al.

Summary: Soil trace metal concentrations in vegetable gardens often exceed background levels, posing a threat to soil, plant functioning, and human health. If current gardening practices continue, concentrations of Cd, Cu, and Zn are predicted to increase after a century, with organic amendments being the major source. Increasing pH may decrease metal solubility and prevent mobility and bioavailability increase.

Summary: The study found that the mean concentrations of all measured metals in irrigation water were below public health guidelines, indicating that there is no need to worry about heavy metal contamination. Additionally, the mean concentrations of nonessential metals in growing area soils were below public health guidelines, suggesting that urban agriculture may be safer than previously thought.

Heavy metals and metalloids concentrations across UK urban horticultural soils and the factors influencing their bioavailability to food crops

Marta Crispo et al.

Summary: Urban horticulture (UH) has been suggested as a solution to enhance urban sustainability, but potential risks from elevated soil heavy metals and metalloids (HM) concentrations pose a major constraint. A UK-wide assessment of soil HM concentrations in UH soils revealed that while many HM concentrations are below screening values, Pb concentrations exceeded the limit. Bioavailable HM concentrations make up a small percentage of total concentrations and are influenced by soil black carbon and organic carbon levels, potentially contributing to their immobilization.

The exercise not only assessed the effectiveness of tree-planting initiatives to offset carbon emissions, but also highlighted the challenges of researching complex environmental issues. Through informal assessment and discussions, it was evident that the activity successfully engaged students with diverse backgrounds and attitudes towards climate change mitigation.

Development of spontaneous vegetation on reclaimed land in Singapore measured by NDVI

Leon Yan-Feng Gaw et al.

Summary: Population and economic growth in Asia has led to increased urbanisation, with Singapore striving to develop as a 'City in Nature' by preserving urban greenery while expanding. The study tracked the temporal trends of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) on reclaimed land in Singapore, showing that spontaneous vegetation development takes about 16.9 years to reach a maturity of 0.7 NDVI. Although patches of spontaneous vegetation on reclaimed lands may not last forever, they have the potential to increase urban greenery and support biodiversity during their existence.

Summary: This study investigated the seasonal variation and source identification of heavy metals (HMs) in peri-urban farms of Hue city, central Vietnam, with a focus on the impact of municipal wastewater. The study found that lettuce samples from farms affected by municipal wastewater were contaminated with Cd, Zn, and Pb, and the levels of HMs were significantly higher in the wet season than in the dry season. The study highlighted rapid urbanization and high precipitation as significant factors contributing to the spread of HMs in agricultural farms.
