Ageing and atherosclerosis: vascular intrinsic and extrinsic factors and potential role of IL-6

Daniel J. Tyrrell et al.

Summary: This Review discusses the mechanisms by which aging promotes atherosclerosis, focusing on the impact of external factors on myeloid cells and internal factors on mitochondrial function. Future research directions and potential therapeutic approaches are proposed to reduce the burden of atherosclerosis in older adults.

Sarcopenia - Molecular mechanisms and open questions

Petra Wiedmer et al.

Summary: Sarcopenia is a muscle-wasting syndrome characterized by progressive loss of skeletal muscle mass, quality, and strength during normal aging. Patients with sarcopenia mainly suffer from loss of muscle strength, leading to mobility disorders, increased risk of morbidity, and mortality. Various molecular mechanisms, including hormone function, muscle fiber composition, and inflammatory pathways, have been identified as causes of sarcopenia.

foxm1 Modulates Cell Non-Autonomous Response in Zebrafish Skeletal Muscle Homeostasis

Fabio J. Ferreira et al.

Summary: foxm1 acts as a master regulator of the cell cycle and influences gene networks associated with various cellular mechanisms. Disrupting foxm1 in zebrafish muscle cells led to myofiber death and clearance, triggering non-autonomous satellite cell activation and proliferation. Additionally, high expression of Cas9 alone showed strong deleterious effects on muscle cells.

Impact of aging and exercise on skeletal muscle mitochondrial capacity, energy metabolism, and physical function

L. Grevendonk et al.

Summary: The decline in mitochondrial function and muscle health associated with aging can be partially offset by increasing physical activity levels through regular exercise training. Maintenance of adequate physical activity levels does not entirely prevent age-associated deterioration of skeletal muscle. Mitochondrial capacity is correlated with exercise efficiency and insulin sensitivity.
