The study found that grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) can significantly improve the lifespan, movement capacity, and antioxidant levels of fruit flies, as well as increase ATP levels. These results suggest that GSP may be a natural agent for improving health span by enhancing stress resistance.
Aging becomes a tremendous health problem. Grape seed proanthocyanidin (GSP) has been wildly reported to be involved in regulating a variety of biological processes. In this study, Drosophila melanogaster model was used to appraise potentially improvement of GSP on health span. Our researches demonstrated that GSP could effectively improve the life span and movement capacity of D. melanogaster, which was consistent with D-galactose-induced aging disorder. Further investigation exhibited that oxidative relevant biomarkers including T-AOC, SOD, CAT and MDA were observably improved in the GSP administration group. On H2O2 challenge tests, treatment of GSP also significantly improved the survival rate and movement capacity of D. melanogaster. Last but not the least, GSP could effectively improve ATP level in aging D. melanogaster. On rotenone challenge tests, treatment of GSP also showed better life span and locomotor capacity than the control group. Based on these results, GSP may be a new natural agent in improving health span by enhancing stress resistance.
