Soil yeasts promoting plant growth: benefits for the development of common wheat and white mustard

Danka Radic et al.

Summary: The experiment analyzed the properties of three yeast species important for plant growth and evaluated their effects on the growth of common wheat and white mustard seedlings. The results showed that all three yeasts had plant growth promoting characteristics, with Cyberlindnera saturnus CK24041 producing the highest amount of nitrate and Schwanniomyces occidentalis BK0302D solubilizing the largest amount of phosphorus. The yeasts also demonstrated potential for application in conventional agriculture and revegetation of disturbed substrates.

Novel marine yeast strains as plant growth-promoting agents improve defense in wheat (Triticum aestivum) against Fusarium oxysporum

M. Marwa. Abdel-Kareem et al.

Summary: Yeasts are multifaceted opportunistic plant symbionts that can positively affect plant growth and defense. Marine yeasts can be potential options for new plant promoters and antagonistic agents against pathogens like Fusarium. Two marine yeast strains isolated from Red Sea water showed significant improvement in wheat growth and defense mechanisms against Fusarium oxysporum, as well as complete inhibition of zearalenone production.

Tailored biosynthesis of gibberellin plant hormones in yeast

Kanchana R. Kildegaard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of using the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica to produce specific profiles of gibberellins. By expressing biosynthetic enzymes and upregulating pathways, they successfully increased the production of GA precursors and specific gibberellins, providing a promising resource for recombinant production and identifying bottlenecks in GA biosynthesis.

Summary: Amidst concerns over the impact of synthetic fungicides on human health and the environment, governments have moved to ban them, leading to increased research into biological alternatives. Studies have shown that Saccharomyces and non-Saccharomyces yeasts may be potential antagonists against fungal pathogens, offering effective control for diseases in fruits and vegetables.
