Drift-dominant exciton funneling and trion conversion in 2D semiconductors on the nanogap

Hyeongwoo Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, a nanogap device is presented to selectively confine excitons or trions of 2D semiconductors at the nanoscale. The exciton transport is facilitated by the drift-dominant effect induced by strain. Hyperspectral tip-enhanced photoluminescence imaging and tip pressure engineering are used to investigate the spatial and spectral characteristics of the funneled excitons. The results show an exciton funneling efficiency of approximately 25%.

Strain induced lifting of the charged exciton degeneracy in monolayer MoS2 on a GaAs nanomembrane

Jakub Jasinski et al.

Summary: Strain is a commonly used tool to tune optoelectronic properties, especially for TMDs. This paper presents a novel approach to induce strain in MoS2 monolayers using homoepitaxially grown GaAs nanomembranes, which allows for the integration of TMDs with III-V semiconductor nanostructures. The strain lifts the degeneracy of exciton states, resulting in linearly polarized emission with the polarization axis determined by the orientation of the nanomembranes.

Phonon-induced exciton weak localization in two-dimensional semiconductors

M. M. Glazov et al.

Summary: This study theoretically investigates the contribution of quantum effects to the exciton diffusion coefficient in atomically thin crystals. The weak localization caused by the interference of excitonic wavefunctions on closed loop trajectories plays a significant role, even when the excitons are scattered by long-wavelength acoustic phonons. The study identifies the regimes where the weak localization effect is particularly pronounced and briefly addresses the role of free charge carriers in exciton quantum transport and higher-order weak localization effects within the self-consistent theory of localization.

Exciton fine structure splitting and linearly polarized emission in strained transition-metal dichalcogenide monolayers

M. M. Glazov et al.

Summary: In this study, we theoretically investigate the influence of anisotropic elastic strain on the fine structure of the exciton energy spectrum and optical selection rules in atomically thin transition-metal dichalcogenide crystals. We find that strain breaks the selection rules and induces linearly polarized optical transitions. Additionally, the applied strain leads to momentum-dependent Zeeman splitting.

Valley polarization fluctuations, bistability, and switching in two-dimensional semiconductors

M. A. Semina et al.

Summary: In this study, we theoretically investigate the nonlinear valley polarization dynamics of excitons in atom-thin semiconductors. We find that the presence of an effective magnetic field resulting from exciton-exciton interactions slows down the valley relaxation, leading to the bistability of valley polarization. Additionally, we study the effects of fluctuations and noise, demonstrating that the fluctuations in the high-polarization regime exhibit high amplitude and long relaxation time.

Intrinsic circularly polarized exciton emission in a twisted van der Waals heterostructure

J. Michl et al.

Summary: This article reports the discovery of intrinsic circular polarization in the exciton photoluminescence of a twisted MoSe2/WSe2 heterostructure when driven by a linearly polarized laser. The polarization is not influenced by the incident light polarization, and is present even at zero magnetic field. Interestingly, the application of a perpendicular magnetic field can significantly diminish this effect, indicating a new pyromagnetic symmetry in the structure.

Optical properties of excitons in two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide nanobubbles

Adlen Smiri et al.

Summary: Strain-induced two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenide forms localized states with exciting band gap properties on hBN substrate, making it a good candidate for single-photon sources. Numerical simulations show that a single optically active confined exciton state exists in MoS2/hBN nanobubbles.

Dark exciton anti-funneling in atomically thin semiconductors

Roberto Rosati et al.

Summary: Strain engineering is used to manipulate the propagation of excitons in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides. The authors observed an anti-funneling behavior, attributed to dark excitons dominating the process. This finding opens up new possibilities for controlling transport in exciton-dominated materials.

Quasi-1D exciton channels in strain-engineered 2D materials

Florian Dirnberger et al.

Summary: Strain engineering is used for designing high-temperature excitonic quantum devices by manipulating the electronic bandstructure and many-particle interactions of 2D TMDCs. The research demonstrates a deterministic way to confine and enhance the mobility of excitons, leading to highly directional exciton flow with significant anisotropy. This fundamental modification in the transport properties of excitons in deterministically strained 2D materials has broad implications for both solid-state science and emerging technologies.

Brightening of dark excitons in 2D perovskites

Mateusz Dyksik et al.

Summary: The study shows that in-plane magnetic field can brighten optically inactive dark excitons and the bright-dark splitting increases with the exciton binding energy. The non-Boltzmann distribution of bright-dark exciton populations in the materials may result from the phonon bottleneck phenomenon.

Nonclassical Exciton Diffusion in Monolayer WSe2

Koloman Wagner et al.

Summary: Experimental results show a highly unusual exciton diffusion behavior in monolayer semiconductors, where the diffusion coefficient decreases significantly with increasing temperature, challenging traditional descriptions of mobile excitons. The origin of this behavior is discussed in the context of nonclassical propagation and microscopic numerical models.

Nonlinear exciton drift in piezoelectric two-dimensional materials

Summary: The study reveals the noncentrosymmetric nature of single-layer transition-metal dichalcogenides, and investigates the microscopic model of nonlinear exciton transport in nanobubbles. The piezo-induced dipole-dipole interaction leads to the formation of hexagon-shaped exciton droplets, which can be tuned by the bubble size dependence of the piezoelectric field.

Valley Orientation of Electrons and Excitons in Atomically Thin Transition Metal Dichalcogenide Monolayers (Brief Review)

M. M. Glazov et al.

Summary: This article briefly reviews the main aspects of physical phenomena associated with the optical orientation of spin and valley degrees of freedom in transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers and van der Waals heterostructures. The circularly polarized light induces optical transitions in different valleys, leading to valley polarization of charge carriers and excitons. The effects of the band structure, excitonic effects, theoretical studies, and experimental data on valley orientation are discussed.

Summary: The exciton valley dynamics in van der Waals heterostructures with transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers are influenced by the long-range exchange interaction. The encapsulation in hexagonal boron nitride has been shown to significantly enhance the exciton valley polarization lifetime, up to fivefold, by modifying the exciton longitudinal-transverse splitting.
