Volatile compounds in human breath: critical review and meta-analysis

Summary: Volatile compounds in human breath can reflect the inner workings of the body, but the identification of breath biomarkers remains inconsistent and conflicting. This study grouped volatile organic compounds into chemical functional groups to improve biomarker discovery. The results show that using targeted functional volatile biomarkers, rather than individual compounds, can improve accuracy and success in diagnostic research and application.

Breath biomarkers of total body irradiation in non-human primates

Summary: Breath volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were evaluated as potential biomarkers for radiation biodosimetry. The study found that radiation exposure caused a significant increase in the abundance of several hundred VOCs in the breath, with some increasing more than five-fold. These VOCs showed 100% sensitivity and 100% specificity for radiation exposure. The most significant VOC biomarkers of radiation were straight-chain n-alkanes, methylated alkanes, and alkane derivatives, consistent with metabolic products of oxidative stress.
