Photocatalytic degradation of atrazine by an N-doped TiO2/polymer composite: catalytic efficiency and toxicity evaluation

Wanda Navarra et al.

Summary: Monolithic composite aerogel based on N-doped TiO2 photocatalyst dispersed into sPS matrix showed efficient atrazine degradation under both UV and visible light irradiation. However, the toxicity of the treated water was still high due to the generation of toxic by-products, indicating the importance of toxicity tests for assessing the environmental impact of water treatment processes.

Brookite vs. rutile vs. anatase: What's behind their various photocatalytic activities?

Gregor Zerjav et al.

Summary: The investigation of synthesized TiO2 polymorphs reveals that the different catalytic efficiency in the heterogeneous photocatalytic process is determined by the depths of charge carrier traps. Brookite with shallow electron traps extends the lifetime and quantity of generated holes, making it a good photocatalyst. Rutile has too deep electron traps, leading to low generation and high recombination rate of charge carriers. Anatase has a longer lifetime of charge carriers due to its indirect band gap semiconductor nature.

UVA LEDs and solar light photocatalytic oxidation/ozonation as a tertiary treatment using supported TiO2: With an eye on the photochemical properties of the secondary effluent

Manuel Figueredo et al.

Summary: This study investigated photocatalytic oxidation/ozonation of pharmaceuticals in secondary effluent using TiO2 supported on ceramic foams. The results showed that photocatalytic ozonation was the most effective method for COD removal, while the presence of contaminants favored their degradation and mineralization.

Elucidation of the photocatalytic degradation mechanism of an azo dye under visible light in the presence of cobalt doped TiO2 nanomaterials

Abderrahim El Mragui et al.

Summary: The synthesis of Co-TiO2 nanoparticles was successfully achieved using sol-gel and precipitation methods, with the physicochemical properties being heavily dependent on the weight percent of Co added. Among the synthesized materials, 1%Co-TiO2 showed the best photocatalytic degradation of methyl orange under visible light due to efficient charge separation. Active species such as O-2(center dot-), h(+), and OH center dot were identified in the degradation pathway of MO dye.
