Paper Simultaneous removal of antimony(III/V) and arsenic(III/V) from aqueous solution by bacteria-mediated kaolin@Fe-Mn binary (hydr) oxides composites

Rui Xu et al.

Summary: A green kaolin@Fe-Mn binary (hydr)oxides composite synthesized by iron oxidizing bacteria (IOB) mediation was developed as a potential adsorbent for the simultaneous removal of antimony (Sb) and arsenic (As) from contaminated water. The composite showed high specific surface area and pore volume, and exhibited efficient removal of Sb and As with adsorption capacities of 177.19, 56.26, 62.92, and 42.18 mg/g for Sb(III), Sb(V), As(III), and As(V), respectively. The kinetics data followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Elovich models, and the mechanism of adsorption involved inner-sphere complexation, surface complexation, hydrogen bonding, and oxidation.

29Si and 27Al MAS NMR spectroscopic studies of activated metakaolin-slag mixtures

Faten Souayfan et al.

Summary: Blending metakaolin with slag in alkali-activated materials can achieve both acceptable engineering properties and durability. NMR spectroscopy is used to investigate the structure of alkali-activation products, but there is no consensus on the analysis of NMR spectra for identifying the phases formed in binary slag-metakaolin mixtures. This study characterizes the phase composition and reaction degree of alkali-activated metakaolin-slag blends, and shows that the incorporation of slag results in higher reactivity and compressive strength of metakaolin.

Bottom slag-to-flue gas controls on S and Cl from co-combustion of textile dyeing sludge and waste biochar: Their interactions with temperature, atmosphere, and blend ratio

Hongyi Huang et al.

Summary: This study quantified the distribution patterns and evolution pathways of S and Cl during the co-combustion of textile dyeing sludge (TDS) and waste biochar (BC). The findings showed that by controlling the atmosphere and adding biochar, the retention of S in the bottom slag could be increased while its release to the flue gas could be reduced. Additionally, the addition of biochar and the control of the atmosphere also had an effect on the Cl content in the bottom slag, inhibiting the decomposition of organic Cl.

Potentiality of phosphorus-accumulating organisms biomasses in biosorption of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II) and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions: Behaviors and mechanisms

Qian Li et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution is a critical global issue, and bioremediation is considered a promising approach. This study investigated the biosorption characteristics of Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) from aqueous solutions using three phosphorus-accumulating organisms (PAOs) biomasses. The results showed that the biosorption capacity of the biosorbents to heavy metal ions was affected by the solution pH and increased with higher pH values. The experimental data of biosorption were well fitted with the Pseudo-second-order, Redlich-Peterson, and Temkin models, suggesting a hybrid chemical reaction-biosorption process.

Flue gas-to-ash desulfurization of combustion of textile dyeing sludge: Its dependency on temperature, lignocellulosic residue, and CaO

Jianli Huang et al.

Summary: In the combustion of textile dyeing sludge, controlling sulfur (S) species through flue gas-to-ash processes is crucial for achieving circular economies. The experimental study found that temperature and blend ratios play significant roles in transforming S in TDS, with the addition of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and calcium oxide (CaO) enhancing desulfurization efficiency. The results suggest that a combination of SMS and CaO can improve the retention of S and enhance the decomposition of calcium sulfate (CaSO4).

Summary: The Si/Al ratio of zeolite on ceramsite can be altered by adding extra silicate/aluminate during the hydrothermal reaction, while the growth of zeolites conforms to the liquid phase transformation mechanism. The phase of zeolite grown on ceramsite changes with the proportion of Si/Al, and zeolite formed in the bulk solution differs from zeolite formed on ceramsite due to diffusion limitation.

Green ceramsite production via calcination of chromium contaminated soil and the toxic Cr(VI) immobilization mechanisms

Chuanhe Fan et al.

Summary: By calcining ceramsite, chromium contaminated soil (CCS) can be effectively disposed of with a suitable calcination temperature above 1100 degrees Celsius. The immobilization mechanism of Cr(VI) in ceramsite involves the transformation of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and the formation of chromium-bearing mineral, (Mg,Fe)(Cr,Al)(2)O-4. Careful determination of the calcination temperature is crucial for the safe and valuable utilization of waste soil.

Effect of hydrothermal pretreatment on pyrolyzed sludge biochars for tetracycline adsorption

Weisheng Chen et al.

Summary: The research compared the adsorption performance of two biochars derived from activated sludge in the treatment of tetracycline, finding that hydrothermal pretreatment can enhance the specific surface area and pore volume, leading to increased adsorption capacity. The spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process involves multi-layer adsorption and chemical adsorption, with mechanisms including pore filling, electrostatic force, hydrogen bond, and pi-pi interaction. The higher adsorption capacity of one biochar is attributed to more adsorption sites provided by its specific surface area and pore volume, with pi-pi interaction playing a major role.
