Adjuvant chemotherapy for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma: A population-based comparative cohort study

Sivesh K. Kamarajah et al.

Summary: This study found that adjuvant chemotherapy following resection for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma (hCCA) was associated with improved survival, even in margin-negative and node-negative disease.

Cholangiocarcinoma landscape in Europe: Diagnostic, prognostic and therapeutic insights from the ENSCCA Registry

Laura Izquierdo-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study investigates the clinical course of cholangiocarcinoma in a pan-European cohort and finds that the disease is frequently diagnosed at an advanced stage and a proportion of patients fail to receive cancer-specific therapies, resulting in a poor prognosis.

Adjuvant radiotherapy improves long-term survival after resection for gallbladder cancer A population-based cohort study

Sivesh K. Kamarajah et al.

Summary: This study found that adjuvant radiotherapy following resection is associated with improved survival in gallbladder cancer patients, even in cases with negative lymph nodes and margins. These findings suggest the addition of radiotherapy to multimodality therapy for gallbladder cancer.

Textbook outcome after major hepatectomy for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma - definitions and influencing factors

Christian Benzing et al.

Summary: This study proposed a uniform definition of textbook outcome for patients undergoing major hepatectomy for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma through a systematic literature review. It identified preoperative biliary drainage and left-sided resection as factors influencing textbook outcome.

Prognostic Impact of Paraaortic Lymph Node Metastasis in Extrahepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Nobuhito Nitta et al.

Summary: This study suggests that the overall survival of resected EHCC patients with PALNM is significantly better than unresected patients, and comparable to patients with regional lymph node metastasis. Several independent prognostic factors were identified through multivariate analysis.

Biliary Strictures and Cholangiocarcinoma - Untangling a Diagnostic Conundrum

Alexander Ney et al.

Summary: Cholangiocarcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive biliary tract malignancy that is difficult to diagnose early. Standard serum markers lack sensitivity and specificity, driving the search for novel biomarkers for screening and early detection. However, clinical translation of these biomarkers is slow and further validation in larger patient cohorts is needed.

Prognostic Impact of Perioperative CA19-9 Levels in Patients with Resected Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma

Jong Woo Lee et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the predictive value of changes in CA19-9 levels for patients undergoing curative resection for perihilar cholangiocarcinoma. It was found that patients in the non-normalization group had significantly worse overall survival, and a high postoperative CA19-9 level was identified as an independent prognostic factor in resected perihilar cholangiocarcinoma patients.

Targeting Lymphangiogenesis and Lymph Node Metastasis in Liver Cancer

Sukanya Roy et al.

Summary: Increased lymphangiogenesis and lymph node metastasis are important prognostic indicators in aggressive hepatobiliary malignancies. This review provides a detailed perspective on alterations in the hepatic lymphatic system during liver malignancies, as well as potential molecular signaling mechanisms and growth factors for future therapeutic targets. Targeting tumor-associated lymphangiogenesis presents current challenges and opportunities for effective therapeutic interventions.

Approach to Resectable Biliary Cancers

Kimberly Washington et al.

Summary: Biliary malignancies, including intrahepatic cholangiocarcinomas, hilar cholangiocarcinomas, and gallbladder carcinomas, require different surgical management strategies based on tumor location and characteristics. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is not routinely used before surgery for biliary malignancies.

Current Surgical Management of Peri-Hilar and Intra-Hepatic Cholangiocarcinoma

Andrea Lauterio et al.

Summary: The treatment of peri-hilar and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma continues to evolve with different strategies and surgical approaches, including advancements in radiological and chemotherapeutic techniques. Surgical resection remains the main curative option for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, with liver transplantation now being considered as a potential treatment for CCA patients thanks to recent improvements in outcomes and survival rates.
