Direct observation of two-dimensional magnons in atomically thin CrI3

John Cenker et al.

Summary: In this study, two-dimensional magnons were directly observed in atomically thin CrI3 using magneto-Raman spectroscopy, revealing optical selection rules and magnetic properties. The phonon magnon mode in monolayers exhibited strict selection rules, while the optical magnon modes in bilayers and bulk materials were influenced by layer index. Additionally, two degenerate optical magnon modes with opposite angular momentum and conjugate optical selection rules were resolved in layered antiferromagnetic states.

Intrinsic 2D-XY ferromagnetism in a van der Waals monolayer

Amilcar Bedoya-Pinto et al.

Summary: Researchers have recently built a nearly ideal easy-plane system and observed robust ferromagnetic ordering on a single CrCl3 monolayer on graphene/6H-SiC(0001), exhibiting critical scaling characteristic of a 2D-XY system. This realization of a finite-size Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in a large-area, quasi-free-standing van der Waals monolayer magnet with an XY universality class offers a material platform for 2D superfluid spin transport and topological magnetic textures.

Half-metallicity and Curie temperature enhancement of CrI3 through boron atoms adsorption

Shoujian Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of boron atom adsorption on monolayer CrI3, revealing that boron atom adsorption can enhance the magnetic moment of CrI3 and lead to different electronic structures and magnetic properties. After boron atom adsorption, the magnetic moment of CrI3 is enhanced, resulting in different magnetic transitions and Curie temperatures.

Monolayer CrCl3 as an Ideal Test Bed for the Universality Classes of 2D Magnetism

M. Dupont et al.

Summary: Monolayer CrCl3 has the unique advantage of tunable magnetic anisotropy under compressive strain, allowing for the production and study of various phases of 2D magnetism. This material shows potential in achieving high BKT transition temperatures due to its weak easy-plane anisotropy.

Emerging oxidized and defective phases in low-dimensional CrCl3

Dario Mastrippolito et al.

Summary: Research on mechanically exfoliated CrCl3 flakes reveals that they spontaneously oxidize upon air exposure, forming an ordered oxidized structure on the surface and chromium oxide at the edges, with thermal stability up to 200 degrees C. The electronic structures of pure monolayer CrCl3 are insulating, while oxidized and defective phases show spin-polarized states and modifications in the band structures.
