Impact of vte4 and crtRB1 genes on composition of vitamin-E and provitamin-A carotenoids during kernel-stages in sweet corn

Hema S. Chauhan et al.

Summary: The study found that biofortified sweet corn inbreds showed significantly higher levels of vitamin E and provitamin A compared to traditional sweet corn inbreds, with the increase mainly occurring between 20-28 days after pollination. The transcription activity of vte4 and crtRB1 genes peaked at 24 days after pollination, with vte4 positively correlated with vitamin E and crtRB1 negatively correlated with provitamin A.

Allelic Variation in Zmfatb Gene Defines Variability for Fatty Acids Composition Among Diverse Maize Genotypes

Ashvinkumar Katral et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive molecular characterization of the fatb gene in maize and various orthologues, revealing genetic variations and potential candidates for modifying fatty acid profiles. The study also sheds light on the genetic relationship between the fatb gene in maize and other oilseed crops, contributing to our understanding of the diversity of unsaturated fatty acid oils.

Sweet Corn Research around the World 2015-2020

Pedro Revilla et al.

Summary: Modern sweet corn is characterized by the presence of recessive alleles in the maize endosperm starch synthesis pathway, resulting in lower starch content and higher sugar concentration. Originally from the USA, fresh sweet corn has gained popularity worldwide as a preferred vegetable choice. Recent research has focused on endosperm genetics, breeding, and physiology in the US, but the introduction of sweet corn in other countries has led to new uses and research activities. This review summarizes sweet corn research from the five years before 2021.

Development of multinutrient-rich biofortified sweet corn hybrids through genomics-assisted selection of shrunken2, opaque2, lcyE and crtRB1 genes

Aanchal Baveja et al.

Summary: The newly developed biofortified sweet corn hybrids, combining sh2, o2, lcyE, and crtRB1 genes, showed significant improvements in essential nutrients such as lysine, tryptophan, and proA, along with high kernel sweetness and cob yield. These hybrids have great significance in providing balanced nutrition, offering a promising solution to addressing health issues caused by nutrient deficiencies in traditional sweet corn.

Expression analysis of β-carotene hydroxylase1 and opaque2 genes governing accumulation of provitamin-A, lysine and tryptophan during kernel development in biofortified sweet corn

Brijesh Kumar Mehta et al.

Summary: Biofortified sweet corn inbreds possessing mutant versions of crtRB1 and o2 genes showed significantly higher levels of nutrients compared to traditional sweet corn, but the levels gradually decreased post-pollination. The expression levels of crtRB1 and o2 genes were lower in biofortified sweet corn inbreds, potentially leading to a reduction in nutrient content.
