Characteristics of people with epilepsy and Neurocysticercosis in three eastern African countries-A pooled analysis

Dominik Stelzle et al.

Summary: Background: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common cause of secondary epilepsy in eastern Africa, but often goes undiagnosed due to lack of awareness. This study pooled data from four studies in Uganda, Malawi, and Tanzania to assess the prevalence and characteristics of NCC in epilepsy patients. Methodology: Clinical characteristics of epilepsy patients were assessed using a questionnaire, and CT scans and serological testing were performed to diagnose NCC. Results: The prevalence of NCC varied between study sites, with higher rates in rural areas. Demographic and lifestyle factors were found to be associated with increased NCC prevalence. Seizures seemed to be less frequent in patients with NCC. The diagnostic sensitivity of different tests for NCC varied. Conclusions: NCC is prevalent among epilepsy patients in eastern Africa, and its prevalence varies by location. Understanding the differences and similarities between epilepsy patients with and without NCC may help improve diagnosis and triage for neuroimaging.

Characteristics of people with epilepsy in three Eastern African countries - a pooled analysis

Dominik Stelzle et al.

Summary: Epilepsy is common in sub-Saharan Africa, mainly caused by neurocysticercosis and ischemic stroke. People with epilepsy suffer from high seizure rates and subsequent injuries, and they also face socio-economic consequences due to insufficient anti-seizure medication treatment.

Summary: This study estimates the prevalence of epileptic seizures and epilepsy in a rural district in Malawi, as well as the proportion of NCC among people with epilepsy. The results contribute to understanding the burden of epilepsy and NCC in sub-Saharan Africa.

The survival and dispersal of Taenia eggs in the environment: what are the implications for transmission? A systematic review

Famke Jansen et al.

Summary: The survival and dispersal of Taenia spp. eggs in the environment are influenced by factors such as temperature and humidity, with eggs commonly found on vegetables, in soil, and water samples, posing a risk to consumers. Invertebrates may act as transport hosts for transmission to intermediate hosts.
