Characteristics of people with epilepsy and Neurocysticercosis in three eastern African countries-A pooled analysis

Summary: Background: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a common cause of secondary epilepsy in eastern Africa, but often goes undiagnosed due to lack of awareness. This study pooled data from four studies in Uganda, Malawi, and Tanzania to assess the prevalence and characteristics of NCC in epilepsy patients. Methodology: Clinical characteristics of epilepsy patients were assessed using a questionnaire, and CT scans and serological testing were performed to diagnose NCC. Results: The prevalence of NCC varied between study sites, with higher rates in rural areas. Demographic and lifestyle factors were found to be associated with increased NCC prevalence. Seizures seemed to be less frequent in patients with NCC. The diagnostic sensitivity of different tests for NCC varied. Conclusions: NCC is prevalent among epilepsy patients in eastern Africa, and its prevalence varies by location. Understanding the differences and similarities between epilepsy patients with and without NCC may help improve diagnosis and triage for neuroimaging.
