Universal description of wetting on multiscale surfaces using integral geometry

Chenhao Sun et al.

Summary: This article proposes a universal description of wetting on multiscale surfaces through the combination of integral geometry and thermodynamic laws. The theoretical framework is presented and applied to different limiting cases. Simulations of fluid droplets on structurally rough and chemically heterogeneous surfaces are conducted to explore the wetting behavior. The findings reveal the origin of classical wetting models within the proposed framework.

Insights into the pore structure and oil mobility in fine-grained sedimentary rocks: The Lucaogou Formation in Jimusar Sag, Junggar Basin, China

Xiaojiao Pang et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the relationship between pore structure and oil movability in fine-grained sedimentary rocks, utilizing various analysis methods such as thin sections, mercury injection capillary pressure (MICP), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). A quantitative evaluation model of movable oil saturation was established based on the findings, improving the understanding of tight/shale oil enrichment in this type of sedimentary rocks.

Geophysical Well-Log Evaluation in the Era of Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources: A Review on Current Status and Prospects

Jin Lai et al.

Summary: This review aims to bridge the gap between well-log evaluation and unconventional hydrocarbon resources by characterizing various properties using petrophysical well logs. Advanced well-log series are used to evaluate unconventional oil and gas, including NMR log, image logs, array acoustic logs, ECS and LithoScanner logs. The relationships between the properties are revealed, and the geological and engineering sweet spots are optimized to support decision-making in exploration and exploitation.

Distribution characteristics and oil mobility thresholds in lacustrine shale reservoir: Insights from N2 adsorption experiments on samples prior to and following hydrocarbon extraction

Long-Hui Bai et al.

Summary: The pore structure and oil content of shales have a significant impact on oil mobility and enrichment. This study focuses on lacustrine shale samples from the Qingshankou Formation in the Songliao Basin. The analysis of mineral composition and organic matter reveals the development of nano-scale organic pores in the shale samples, with oil primarily found in pore spaces smaller than 10 nm. High oil mobility is observed when TOCo > 2.0 wt% and EOM > 1.0 wt%, indicating prospective drilling targets in the Qingshankou Formation shale.

Bedding parallel fractures in fine-grained sedimentary rocks: Recognition, formation mechanisms, and prediction using well log

Jin Lai et al.

Summary: This study utilizes core, thin section, conventional, and image log data to investigate the distribution of fractures in the fine-grained sedimentary rocks of the Permian Lucaogou Formation in Jimusar Sag. The results reveal the presence of tectonic inclined fractures, bedding parallel fractures, and abnormal high-pressure fractures. Bedding parallel fractures are abundant but mostly sealed by carbonate minerals and bitumen. These fractures lead to a rapid decrease in resistivity and can be identified on image logs. The distribution of fractures aligns with bedding planes and is influenced by the density of bedding planes. This research provides valuable insights for optimizing sweet spots, improving fracturing designs, and optimizing well spacing in fine-grained sedimentary rocks.

Source of silica and its implications for organic matter enrichment in the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian black shale in western Hubei Province, China: Insights from geochemical and petrological analysis

Quan-Sheng Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between silica source and organic matter enrichment in the black shale of the Upper Ordovician-Lower Silurian in western Hubei Province. The results suggest that biogenic silica and terrigenous siliciclastic input are the main sources of silica in the black shale, and they are influenced by sea-level changes. The study also reveals that organic matter enrichment and silica distribution are controlled by sea-level changes and variations in terrigenous input.

Geological-petrophysical insights in the deep Cambrian dolostone reservoirs in Tarim Basin, China

Jin Lai et al.

Summary: The occurrence and petrology of dolomites, along with their pore systems in the Cambrian of Tarim Basin, China, were documented through the integration of cores, thin sections, and cathodoluminescence analysis. Six types of dolomite were identified, with various pore systems dominating the reservoir types. Fractures were found to enhance reservoir quality in dolostone reservoirs.

Improving oil recovery of Eagle Ford shale samples using cryogenic and cyclic gas injection methods-An experimental study

Faisal Altawati et al.

Summary: Implementing cryogenic and cyclic gas injection, particularly using liquid nitrogen, can significantly improve shale oil recovery by up to 78% by creating new cracks and high-flow channels for enhanced oil and gas exchange. This method alters the porosity, permeability, and velocities of the samples, providing a potential solution for improving oil recovery in shale oil fields.
