High Speed Synchronous Reluctance Machines: Modeling, Design and Limits

Gianvito Gallicchio et al.

Summary: The non-standardized design procedure of synchronous reluctance (SyR) machines poses a significant barrier to their adoption, requiring consideration of conflicting requirements incurring at high speeds. Analytical models lack accuracy, forcing heavy reliance on finite element analysis (FEA) during the design refinement stage. This study proposes a computationally efficient hybrid analytical-FE design process for high-speed SyR machines, with validation against experimental measurements on a prototype.

High-Speed Synchronous Reluctance Machines: Materials Selection and Performance Boundaries

Mauro Di Nardo et al.

Summary: This article presents a comprehensive comparative design exercise of synchronous reluctance (SyR) machines considering different soft magnetic materials and a wide range of speeds. The adoption of CoFe alloys leads to machines that outperform the SiFe counterparts up to a certain speed, above which, machines with SiFe provide better performance. The design considerations are validated by comparing the predicted performance with the experimental test results.

High Speed Permanent Magnet Machine Design for Optimum Volumetric Power Density

Zhentao Stephen Du et al.

Summary: This paper explores a high-speed permanent magnet machine design option with low-cost magnets and high-efficiency core steel, comparing the characteristics and performances of concentrated winding and distributed winding designs. The conclusion is that the concentrated winding design is more volumetric power dense and therefore more suitable for high-speed applications.
