High-Harmonic Generation from Resonant Dielectric Metasurfaces Empowered by Bound States in the Continuum

George Zograf et al.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of BICs to the field of high-harmonic generation and uses resonant dielectric metasurfaces to efficiently generate optical harmonics up to the 11th order, including the observation of a transition to the nonlinear regime. This research bridges the fields of perturbative and nonperturbative nonlinear optics at the subwavelength scale.

Polarization-Independent Quasibound States in the Continuum

Pravin Vaity et al.

Summary: This paper uncovers a new property of the trapped mode supported by a dielectric resonant metasurface, which changes its lattice symmetry. The study focuses on the transformation process of a metasurface composed of identical nanodisk resonators into a diatomic structure when one half of the nanodisks change their diameters. The folding of the Brillouin zone in the k-space results in the transformation of the trapped mode to quasi-BIC resonances, which exhibit polarization-independent response. This novel feature is experimentally verified in the transmission of the metasurfaces illuminated by light with both linear and circular polarizations.

Significantly enhanced second-harmonic generations with all-dielectric antenna array working in the quasi-bound states in the continuum and excited by linearly polarized plane waves

Zhanghua Han et al.

Summary: All-dielectric optical nanoantennas based on high-index semiconductors are proven to be an effective and low-loss alternative to metal-based plasmonic structures for light control and enhancing light-semiconductor interactions. By carefully designing high-index semiconductor nanostructures, novel high-quality factor resonances based on the concept of bound states in the continuum can be easily excited, further boosting nonlinear effects. Using AlGaAs as the nonlinear material, a significant increase in second-harmonic generation efficiency is demonstrated compared to magnetic dipole resonances.

Nonlinear Dielectric Nanoantennas and Metasurfaces: Frequency Conversion and Wavefront Control

Gustavo Grinblat

Summary: High-index dielectric nanostructures have the potential to support optical resonances with ultralow linear absorption, allowing for efficient harmonic generation and wave-mixing processes. By confining electromagnetic fields and amplifying non-linearities, these structures offer new possibilities in nonlinear nanophotonics, including nonlinear imaging, holography, and all-optical switching. Further research is needed to explore the varied configurations and potential future directions in the field.

Ultimate conversion efficiency of second harmonic generation in all-dielectric resonators of quasi-BICs in consideration of nonlinear refraction of dielectrics

Tingyin Ning et al.

Summary: This study investigates second harmonic generation in all-dielectric resonance nanostructures with high-Q factors assisted by quasi-bound states in the continuum. The research reveals that linear transmission and SHG spectra in the resonators can change dramatically under intense pump intensities, and SHG conversion efficiency in nanostructures working at quasi-BICs is lower than traditionally expected values. The ultimate SHG conversion efficiency is determined, providing significance for the design and understanding of efficient nonlinear metasurfaces with high-Q factors.

Near-unity third-harmonic circular dichroism driven by a quasibound state in the continuum in asymmetric silicon metasurfaces

Marco Gandolfi et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations demonstrate third-harmonic generation with near-unity nonlinear circular dichroism and high conversion efficiency in asymmetric Si-on-SiO2 metasurfaces. By tuning the metasurface geometrical parameters, control over both linear and nonlinear circular dichroism can be achieved. These results pave the way for the development of all-dielectric metasurfaces for nonlinear chiro-optical devices with high conversion efficiency.
