Leveraging On-Chip Transistor Switching for Communication and Sensing in Neural Implants and Gastrointestinal Devices

Seun Sangodoyin et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Proof-of-Concept (POC) design and implementation of a biosensing and communication system for biotelemetry in neural and GI applications. The system is based on backscattering from a semi-passive RFID implemented using an ASIC, and the results show its effectiveness in penetrating different tissues and achieving high signal fidelity in biosensing. This research provides an important practical basis for the design and development of RFID ASIC in medical applications.

An Optical Implant for Biotelemetry: Design, In Vivo Verification, and Challenges

Illsoo Sohn et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel optical wireless framework for Internet of Things (IoT) biotelemetry, using an implantable medical device (IMD) to capture in-body electrocardiogram (ECG) and transmit it through optical wireless communication. The optical IMD design achieves sub-milliwatt-level power consumption and allows seamless long-term ECG monitoring with limited battery capacity, resulting in improved diagnostic accuracy. In vivo experiments verify the viability of the IMD prototype for real-time biotelemetry, with the added benefit of ultra-low-power optical emission being harmless to the body.

A New Multilevel Pulsed Modulation Technique for Low Power High Data Rate Optical Biotelemetry

Guido Di Patrizio Stanchieri et al.

Summary: This study presents a novel multilevel synchronized pulse position modulation technique that increases data transmission efficiency and reduces overall power consumption of wireless ultra-wide-band optical biotelemetry links. By designing digital architectures and using 500 ps laser pulses, symbols composed of multiple bits are transmitted effectively. Preliminary results show a transmission data rate of 120 Mbps with an energy efficiency of 16.25 pJ/bit and a maximum power consumption of 1.95 mW for the complete system.

Summary: This study explores the impact of transistor downscaling on wireless communication circuits for Body Dust applications, requiring small size and ultra-low power architecture for wireless powering. By scaling the architecture from 0.18 μm to 28 nm CMOS processes, significant improvements in size and power consumption can be achieved.
