Proteome-wide analysis reveals molecular pathways affected by AgNP in a ROS-dependent manner

Renata Rank Miranda et al.

Summary: The use of mass spectrometry-based proteomics has provided detailed insights into the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the toxicity of silver nanoparticles (AgNP), showing that AgNP induces ROS generation and inhibits cell proliferation pathways. Additionally, it was found that cells increase their antioxidant pool via the NRF2 pathway as a response to AgNP-induced ROS.

Safe- and sustainable-by-design: The case of Smart Nanomaterials. A perspective based on a European workshop

Agnieszka Mech et al.

Summary: The European Commission's Green Deal aims to achieve a climate-neutral, zero pollution, sustainable economy with the help of safe and sustainable innovative materials. To achieve this, the development of chemicals needs to shift towards Safe-and Sustainable-by-Design, with agreed terminology, common principles, and assessment tools in place.

Label-Free Digital Holographic Microscopy for In Vitro Cytotoxic Effect Quantification of Organic Nanoparticles

Kai Moritz Eder et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of quantitative phase imaging (QPI) with digital holographic microscopy (DHM) as a time-resolved in vitro assay to evaluate the effects of organic nanoparticles on cell viability. The results show that DHM is highly suitable for identifying harmful or low-toxic nanomaterials.

Determining nanoform similarity via assessment of surface reactivity by abiotic and in vitro assays

Didem Ag Seleci et al.

Summary: This work discusses the justification of grouping of nanoforms based on similarity of their surface reactivity, using four reactivity assays. A novel similarity assessment algorithm was applied to quantify similarities between pairs of nanoforms, with focus on the concentration-response in mass-metrics. Despite differences in outcomes from different reactivity assays, some pairs of case study nanoforms were considered sufficiently similar based on in vivo NOAECs, indicating conservative assessment by the abiotic assays.
