Nowhere to run: semi-permeable barriers affect pronghorn space use

Benjamin S. Robb et al.

Summary: This study quantified the relative permeability of different anthropogenic barriers to pronghorn movement and assessed their influence on pronghorn space use using GPS collar data. The results showed that interstates were the most severe barrier to pronghorn movement, and the effects of barriers on pronghorn space use were not proportional to their permeability, but also depended on their density and location.

Barrier Behaviour Analysis (BaBA) reveals extensive effects of fencing on wide-ranging ungulates

Wenjing Xu et al.

Summary: As human activities continue to expand globally, the need to identify and mitigate barriers to animal movements becomes more important. Fences, a common human modification to the landscape, can significantly impact the movements of wide-ranging animals. Through the Barrier Behaviour Analysis (BaBA) approach, researchers were able to categorize animal behaviors in response to linear barriers, providing insights on species-specific fencing permeability and guiding conservation interventions. Overall, this study highlights the importance of understanding and addressing the effects of barriers such as fences on wildlife movement.

The 2020 elephant die-off in Botswana

Rudi J. van Aarde et al.

Summary: The cause of death of 350 elephants in a small area of northern Botswana in 2020 remains unknown, with media speculations potentially harmful and ignoring ecological realities. It is more likely that a contagious disease is responsible for the deaths, rather than malicious poisoning or poaching. The deaths highlight the need for a broader understanding of ecological and conservation issues in the region.

Quantifying wildlife responses to conservation fencing in East Africa

Christine E. Wilkinson et al.

Summary: The study found that the implementation of fences in protected areas has outpaced scientific assessment of their effectiveness, non-target impacts, and long-term costs. Research conducted in Lake Nakuru National Park in Kenya showed that fences can affect wild mammal movement and behavior, and fence maintenance may impact wildlife crossings and behavior.

Habitat use and spatio-temporal interactions of mule and white-tailed deer in an area of sympatry in NE Washington

Anna R. Staudenmaier et al.

Summary: Through a study in the Colville National Forest, it was found that mule deer and white-tailed deer exhibit geographical habitat segregation in areas of sympatry, with mule deer preferring steep slopes and higher elevations, and white-tailed deer favoring shallower slopes and lower elevations. The different habitat selections by the two deer species reduce the potential for current interspecies interactions, but no evidence of ongoing agonistic interactions was found in this study system.

Causes, Consequences, and Conservation of Ungulate Migration

Matthew J. Kauffman et al.

Summary: Advancements in modern animal tracking have significantly enhanced our understanding of ungulate migration over the past seven decades. Research has shown that wild ungulates fine tune their movements based on dynamic landscapes, including seasonal changes in forage, snow, and drought, blending gradient tracking with spatial memory. Despite the benefits of migration for ecosystems, many migrations are at risk due to habitat fragmentation, climate change, and barriers to movement, but new efforts using empirical tracking data are helping to facilitate conservation measures for ungulate migration.
