Carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles loaded with bioactive protein CiCXCL20a effectively prevent bacterial disease in grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella)

Zhensheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that nanoparticle CMCS-20a loaded with carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCS) has a good preventive effect on bacterial diseases in aquaculture. CMCS-20a can effectively kill bacteria and reduce the influence of external factors, it is almost non-toxic to fish cells, and can increase the activity of important antibacterial substances in the serum. Furthermore, CMCS-20a can improve fish survival rate by regulating inflammation responses, reducing bacterial burdens, and alleviating tissue lesions.

Rapid detection of Edwardsiella ictaluri in yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) by real-time RPA and RPA-LFD

Haoxuan Li et al.

Summary: Yellow catfish is an important freshwater cultured fish in China, but it is susceptible to enteric septicemia and red-head disease caused by Edwardsiella ictaluri, resulting in significant economic losses in the farming industry. This study developed rapid and accurate detection methods, including RPA, real-time RPA, and RPA-LFD, targeting a specific gene sequence in E. ictaluri. These methods demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity, and showed great potential for diagnosing E. ictaluri disease in fish farms.

CXCL20a, a Teleost-Specific Chemokine That Orchestrates Direct Bactericidal, Chemotactic, and Phagocytosis-Killing-Promoting Functions, Contributes to Clearance of Bacterial Infections

Yanqi Zhang et al.

Summary: CiCXCL20a, a chemokine from grass carp, demonstrates broad-spectrum, potent bactericidal activity in addition to chemoattraction of immune cells. It kills bacteria by targeting acid lipids, perforating bacterial membrane, and neutralizing LPS, leading to bacterial leakage and death. This study shows the close functional relationship between early vertebrate chemokines and antimicrobial peptides.
