On LASSO for predictive regression

Ji Hyung Lee et al.

Summary: This paper explores the pitfalls and possibilities of the LASSO methods in predictive regression, introducing a new twin adaptive LASSO (TAlasso) to restore variable selection consistency. TAlasso achieves the well-known oracle property by accommodating the system of heterogeneous regressors.

Direct prediction of site-specific lime requirement of arable fields using the base neutralizing capacity and a multi-sensor platform for on-the-go soil mapping

Sebastian Vogel et al.

Summary: A site-specific variable rate liming strategy utilizing proximal soil sensing module and advanced multivariate linear regression analysis improved the prediction accuracy of lime requirement. High adjusted R-2 values and low RMSE values were achieved for each field, with an improvement of 3 to 27% compared to univariate modeling. The importance of covariates varied among fields, with soil pH being the most important parameter for determining lime requirement in the studied soils.

Combined Use of Vis-NIR and XRF Sensors for Tropical Soil Fertility Analysis: Assessing Different Data Fusion Approaches

Tiago Rodrigues Tavares et al.

Summary: Visible and near infrared (vis-NIR) diffuse reflectance and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) sensors are effective tools for predicting soil key fertility attributes in Brazilian tropical soils. When combined, these sensors using various data fusion approaches showed improved accuracy in predicting soil attributes. The results demonstrate the complementarity of XRF and vis-NIR sensors in predicting soil fertility attributes, suggesting the need for further research on optimized data fusion methods.

A combined data mining approach for on-line prediction of key soil quality indicators by Vis-NIR spectroscopy

Muhammad Abdul Munnaf et al.

Summary: Successful modelling of vis-NIR spectra is crucial for accurate variable rate applications of farm input resources. This study optimized on-line collected spectra for the prediction of soil quality indicators using spiking, clustering, and extra-weighting methods. Results showed that combining clustering with extra-weighting improved prediction accuracy for soil pH, organic carbon, extractable phosphorous, and potassium.

On Robustness of Principal Component Regression

Anish Agarwal et al.

Summary: Principal Component Regression (PCR) is a method commonly used when covariates exhibit low-rank structure, but its effectiveness in handling noise, missing data, and mixed-valued covariates remains unclear. This work establishes the robustness of PCR by showing its equivalence to linear regression after preprocessing through hard singular value thresholding (HSVT). Additionally, it demonstrates how PCR can be utilized in counterfactual analysis and synthetic control, providing stronger guarantees in HSV estimation in terms of l2, infinity norm.

Guidelines for precise lime management based on high-resolution soil pH, texture and SOM maps generated from proximal soil sensing data

Eric Boenecke et al.

Summary: By using proximal soil sensing to generate high-resolution soil maps and predicting soil pH, texture, and organic matter content, specific lime application can be achieved to address soil variability. The study adapts an established lime recommendation algorithm to determine lime requirements and shows the benefits of variable-rate liming compared to uniform lime application.
