Examining the added value of microperimetry and low luminance deficit for predicting progression in age-related macular degeneration

Zhichao Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that microperimetry and the presence of pigmentary abnormalities were significantly associated with the time of late age-related macular degeneration (AMD) development, but low luminance deficit (LLD) was not. Adding microperimetry and/or LLD information to a predictive model that included CFP grading did not improve its predictive performance.

Simple Vision Function Tests that Distinguish Eyes with Early to Intermediate Age-related Macular Degeneration

Lori A. Lott et al.

Summary: The study found that simple screening tests can distinguish eyes with intermediate AMD from those with milder AMD or normal aging changes. These vision measures may be significant predictors of which participants will progress to advanced AMD.

USING MICROPERIMETRY AND LOW-LUMINANCE VISUAL ACUITY TO DETECT THE ONSET OF LATE AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION A LEAD Study Report

Zhichao Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that microperimetry, low-luminance visual acuity, and best-corrected visual acuity have limited performance in detecting the earliest onset of late AMD, with only a fair degree of agreement between them.

Visual Function in Eyes with Intermediate AMD with and without Retinal Pigment Abnormalities

Marilyn E. Schneck et al.

Summary: In intermediate AMD, sensitivity to radial deformation is significantly more impaired in eyes with hyperpigmentation than in eyes with large drusen but normal retinal pigmentation, indicating a higher risk of progression to advanced AMD. This study aimed to determine if psychophysical measures can differentiate between two levels of intermediate AMD with different risks of progression to advanced AMD. The presence of abnormal retinal pigmentation in eyes with large drusen is associated with a higher risk of developing advanced AMD.
