Machine learning reveals key ion selectivity mechanisms in polymeric membranes with subnanometer pores

Cody L. Ritt et al.

Summary: Designing single-species selective membranes requires understanding molecular interactions governing solute transport. We assess features influencing anion separation by nanoporous cellulose acetate membranes and identify limitations of bulk solvation characteristics. Machine learning helps elucidate descriptors for energetic barriers, with electrostatic features playing a dominant role. These findings can aid in designing ion-selective membranes.

Layer-by-layer (LBL) hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes for seawater treatment: Ion rejection

Chenjun Dong et al.

Summary: Layer by layer hollow fiber nanofiltration membranes assembled by poly(styrene sulfonate)/poly(allylamine) demonstrated stable ion rejection and unique ion rejection behavior. Excessive compensation of cationic amine groups contributed to high rejection rates, highlighting a third dimension in ion transport.

Revisiting the alkali hydrolysis of polyamide nanofiltration membranes

Manas Ranjan Puhan et al.

Summary: This study revisited the alkali hydrolysis post-treatment of a polyamide nanofiltration membrane. It was found that the post-treatment increased the pure water permeance without affecting solute rejection, possibly due to the physical restructuring of the polyamide layer or the restructuring of the support layer and interface.

Sustainable nanofiltration membranes based on biosourced fully recyclable polyesters and green solvents

Rifan Hardian et al.

Summary: A new class of biosourced nanofiltration membranes based on chemically recyclable aliphatic polyesters and green solvents is reported. These polyester membranes are designed to have a sustainable lifecycle due to their chemical recyclability and potential biodegradability. The effect of membrane thickness and solvent/non-solvent diffusivity on membrane morphology and organic solvent nanofiltration was investigated. Long-term stability tests demonstrated stable methanol permeance and rejection profiles for pharmaceuticals.

Fouling-Resistant Membranes with Tunable Pore Size Fabricated Using Cross-Linkable Copolymers with High Zwitterion Content

Samuel J. Lounder et al.

Summary: This work presents a new method for synthesizing extremely fouling-resistant, zwitterionic membranes with controlled pore sizes. The membrane performance can be tuned by adjusting the zwitterion content, with higher zwitterion content resulting in larger pore sizes and permeance. The high zwitterion content membranes exhibit remarkable fouling resistance and demonstrate a previously unobserved salt-responsive behavior.

Novel Positively Charged Metal-Coordinated Nanofiltration Membrane for Lithium Recovery

Li Wang et al.

Summary: The study developed a nonpolyamide nanofiltration membrane based on a metal-coordinated structure, demonstrating simultaneously improved water permeance and Li+/Mg2+ selectivity, surpassing the trade-off of permeance selectivity of traditional membranes. The novel membrane also exhibited enhanced anti-biofouling property and pH-responsive characteristics, providing an exciting approach for fabricating high-performance nanofiltration membranes in lithium recovery applications.

Tailored pore size and microporosity of covalent organic framework (COF) membranes for improved molecular separation

Digambar B. Shinde et al.

Summary: By introducing bulky alkyl groups into the truxene framework, the pore sizes of three crystalline truxene-based -ketoenamine COF membranes were systematically tuned, leading to different water permeances and rejection rates for various molecules. The pore-flow model rooted from the viscous flow fitting the observed organic solvent nanofiltration results indicates the fundamental correlations between pore structure and molecular separation performance in COF membranes.

New compact expressions for concentration-polarization of trace-ions in pressure-driven membrane processes

Yaeli S. Oren et al.

Summary: It is crucial to consider concentration-polarization in membrane separation processes for solute transport modeling. The study focused on trace ions in a dominant salt solution, deriving analytical solutions for concentration-polarization and membrane transport. Two compact equations were obtained as an extension to the classic film theory to account for the effect of electromigration on concentration-polarization.
