LAMMPS-a flexible simulation tool for particle-based materials modeling at the atomic, meso, and continuum scales

Aidan P. Thompson et al.

Summary: LAMMPS, a classical molecular dynamics simulator released as an open source code in 2004, has gained popularity for its wide variety of particle interaction models, platform compatibility, and user control over simulation details. With contributions from numerous developers, it has grown from 50,000 lines of code to a million today, showcasing new capabilities like dynamic load balancing and quantum-accuracy machine learning interatomic potentials.

Dynamic restructuring of supported metal nanoparticles and its implications for structure insensitive catalysis

Charlotte Vogt et al.

Summary: In this study, structure insensitivity in catalysis was found to be linked to reaction-dependent particle size dependent restructuring. We observed particle size-dependent effects such as restructuring during ethene hydrogenation, which increased with increasing particle size, while no such effects were observed during CO2 hydrogenation. Additionally, we demonstrated that the rate of carbon diffusion on and into nanoparticles increases with particle size.

Four Generations of High-Dimensional Neural Network Potentials

Joerg Behler

Summary: Machine learning potentials have become an important tool in atomistic simulations over the past 25 years. The development of high-dimensional neural network potentials (HDNNPs) has allowed for the simulation of large systems with thousands of atoms, with continuous advancements leading to the emergence of fourth-generation HDNNPs. Despite some limitations, the future outlook for HDNNPs is promising with potential for further developments.

Bayesian force fields from active learning for simulation of inter-dimensional transformation of stanene

Yu Xie et al.

Summary: A method is presented to significantly accelerate Gaussian process models for interatomic force fields by mapping forces and uncertainties onto low-dimensional features. This allows for automated active learning of models combining near-quantum accuracy, built-in uncertainty, and comparable evaluation cost to classical analytical models, capable of simulating millions of atoms. Large-scale molecular dynamics simulations of the stability of the stanene monolayer reveal an unusual phase transformation mechanism of 2D stanene.

Structural Evolution of Cu/ZnO Catalysts during Water-Gas Shift Reaction: An In Situ Transmission Electron Microscopy Study

Zejian Dong et al.

Summary: This study used in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy to investigate the atomic-scale structural evolution of Cu/ZnO catalysts under water-gas shift reaction conditions. The research revealed that under a CO environment, Cu nanoparticles decompose and redistribute on ZnO supports, forming different phases of Cu species, while various metal-support interactions between Cu and ZnO were visualized under reaction conditions.

Summary: Nanoparticles have versatile applications due to their tunable properties, with the distribution of elements and phase transitions within brass nanoparticles showing unique characteristics. The use of machine learning potentials allowed for accurate structural characterizations in simulations, revealing both the inhomogeneous distribution of elements and the decrease in melting temperature with increasing zinc-atom fraction.

Structure reconstruction of metal/alloy in reaction conditions: a volcano curve?

Jun Meng et al.

Summary: Recent in situ works have revealed dramatic and reversible structure reconstructions of metal and alloy materials in reaction conditions, potentially leading to alternative catalytic mechanisms. Multiscale theoretical models have been developed to predict the equilibrium shapes of metal nanoparticles and the segregation properties of alloy surfaces, allowing for precise interpretations of experimental observations. The study shows that gas-induced shape change and segregation change can be maximized under specific gas adsorption conditions, with pressure affecting the fraction of low-coordinated sites and the environmental segregation energy of metal nanoparticles and bimetallic alloys. The findings suggest that structural information obtained in laboratory environments could be applied to understand catalyst structure reconstruction in industrial conditions.
