Relativistic Description of Dense Matter Equation of State and Compatibility with Neutron Star Observables: A Bayesian Approach

Tuhin Malik et al.

Summary: The general behavior of the nuclear equation of state (EOS) relevant for neutron stars is studied using a Bayesian approach. A set of models based on a density-dependent relativistic mean-field description of nuclear matter is used. The EOS is subjected to minimal constraints based on nuclear saturation properties and a precise calculation in chiral effective field theory. The posterior distributions of the model parameters are used to construct the distributions of various nuclear matter and neutron star properties. The results are found to be compatible with observed data without invoking exotic degrees of freedom.

Bayesian inference of signatures of hyperons inside neutron stars

Tuhin Malik et al.

Summary: The possible signatures of hyperons inside neutron stars are discussed using a Bayesian inference framework. Based on nuclear matter and hypernuclei properties, as well as observational information, the general properties of neutron stars are examined. It is found that neutron stars described by equations of state that include hyperons have larger radius and tidal deformability, but smaller speed of sound compared to stars described by nucleonic equations of state. Specific constraints on the possible hyperon content of neutron stars are given based on measurements of mass and radius. The presence of hyperons inside neutron stars is compatible with current observations of pulsars and gravitational wave detection.

Can we decipher the composition of the core of a neutron star?

C. Mondal et al.

Summary: General relativity ensures a unique correspondence between static observables of neutron stars accessible by multimessenger astronomy and the equation of state (EoS) of beta-equilibrated matter. However, even in the purely nucleonic hypothesis, multiple solutions to the beta-equilibrium equation can lead to indeterminacy in the interior composition of neutron stars. Additional empirical information regarding high-density symmetric matter is not very efficient in determining the composition, considering measurement uncertainties. Constraints on the symmetry energy at high densities can make a meaningful impact on deciphering the composition of neutron star cores.

Bayesian analysis of the properties of hybrid stars with the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model

Antoine Pfaff et al.

Summary: This article discusses the possible presence of deconfined matter in the cores of massive neutron stars and emphasizes the importance of setting limits on the size and characteristics of a hypothetical quark core. Through a Bayesian analysis, the properties of nonrotating hybrid stars with quark matter cores are determined, revealing the significant role of microscopic vector interactions in stiffening the equation of state for high star masses. Furthermore, it is found that the nucleon-quark transition has a minimal impact on the radii of compact stars, suggesting a low observability of a possible phase transition using x-ray radii measurements.

Bayesian reconstruction of nuclear matter parameters from the equation of state of neutron star matter

Sk Md Adil Imam et al.

Summary: A Bayesian approach is used to reconstruct the posterior distributions of nuclear matter parameters (NMPs) from the equation of state (EoS) of neutron star matter. The study reveals significant deviations and larger uncertainties in the median values of second- or higher-order NMPs compared to their true values. The sources of these uncertainties are identified as the correlations among various NMPs and the leeway in the EoS of symmetric nuclear matter, symmetry energy, and neutron-proton asymmetry.

Translating Neutron Star Observations to Nuclear Symmetry Energy via Deep Neural Networks

Plamen G. Krastev

Summary: One of the key challenges in understanding the equation of state of dense neutron-rich matter is the uncertain density dependence of the nuclear symmetry energy. Recent observations have significantly constrained the nuclear symmetry energy at high densities. The next generation of telescopes and gravitational-wave observatories will further improve our understanding of the density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy and the equation of state. Deep learning approach has shown potential in reconstructing the symmetry energy and equation of state directly from neutron star observational data.

Astrophysical Constraints on the Symmetry Energy and the Neutron Skin of 208Pb with Minimal Modeling Assumptions

Reed Essick et al.

Summary: The symmetry energy and its density dependence play crucial roles in nuclear and astrophysics, influencing properties ranging from the neutron-skin thickness of nuclei to the radius of neutron stars. Observations of neutron stars have allowed for constraints on the symmetry energy S-0, slope parameter L, and the neutron skin thickness of Pb-208, indicating a preference for smaller values of neutron skin and L.
