Dithiols as Liquid Crystalline Building Blocks for Smart Polymers via Thiol-yne Click Chemistry

Flavia Lupi et al.

Summary: Liquid crystalline elastomers (LCEs) have attracted significant attention from researchers due to their anisotropic molecular structure for building artificial muscles. Recent studies have shown that the main chain structure plays a crucial role in modulating the thermomechanical properties of LCEs, while the side-chain structure greatly influences the mechanical response. These findings not only enhance understanding of the chemical-physical properties of LCEs, but also pave the way for the development of multicomponent actuators capable of deformation at different temperature ranges.

Yujia Liu et al.

Summary: Tetra(3-mercaptopropyl)-silsesquioxanes with double-decker (DDSQ) or ladder nano-cores can be easily prepared through efficient thiol-ene reactions. Additionally, a more flexible tetrathiol-DDSQ was synthesized in high yield from the corresponding tetrachloro-DDSQ derivative. These novel tetrathiol silsesquioxanes serve as versatile building blocks for hybrid organic-inorganic materials preparation.
