The effect of nut consumption (tree nuts and peanuts) on the gut microbiota of humans: a systematic review

Emily Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: Nuts consumption has a modest impact on gut microbiota diversity, with specific effects varying among studies. Shifts in microbial composition, particularly the increase in genera producing SCFA, were observed following nut intake. Variations in trial design and individual microbiota may explain inconsistent results across studies.

A Pipeline towards the Biochemical Characterization of the Arabidopsis GT14 Family

Lingling Xuan et al.

Summary: Glycosyltransferases play a crucial role in the synthesis of glycosidic linkages and are more abundant in plant genomes compared to animal genomes. By cloning and characterizing Arabidopsis GTs, researchers have identified new enzymes and established a functional analysis pipeline for efficient identification of novel GT catalytic activities.

Functional analysis of GT61 glycosyltransferases from grass species in xylan substitutions

Ruiqin Zhong et al.

Summary: Multiple members of the rice GT61 family were identified as xylan arabinosyltransferases (XATs) involved in 3-O-arabinosylation of xylan in grass species. Additionally, homologs of XATs and xylan 2-O-xylosyltransferases (XYXTs) in maize, sorghum, Brachypodium, and switchgrass were also found to exhibit similar activities, indicating evolutionary conservation of these functions in grass species.

Sulfation of Arabinogalactan Proteins Confers Privileged Nutrient Status to Bacteroides plebeius

Jose Munoz-Munoz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the ability of Bacteroides species to utilize marine and terrestrial arabinogalactan proteins (AGPs). The data showed that only one bacterium, B. plebeius, grew on Wi-AGP and SW-AGP, indicating that Wi-AGP acts as a privileged nutrient for Bacteroides species that utilize marine and terrestrial plant glycans. A key component in the AGP-degrading system of B. plebeius is a sulfatase that enables the bacterium to utilize these glycans, providing a route to introducing privileged nutrient utilization into other probiotic and commensal organisms.
