The Sum of All Fears: Comparing Networks Based on Symptom Sum-Scores

Jonas M. B. Haslbeck et al.

Summary: The article discusses network models in clinical psychology and psychiatry that examine the relationships between symptoms of mental disorders. Comparing network models across different groups may introduce bias, depending on the research question at hand. Comparing network models estimated from groups defined by sum-scores does not introduce bias, but bias may be present in other situations.

Modeling Psychopathology: From Data Models to Formal Theories

Jonas M. B. Haslbeck et al.

Summary: Over the last decade, empirical research has increasingly focused on mental disorders as complex systems. This article explores how to utilize this research to advance the field towards explaining, predicting, and controlling psychopathology. The authors propose that constructing formal theories of mental disorders is essential, and suggest using empirical data models to inform the development of these theories, with the comparison of empirical and theory-implied data models being the most promising approach. The introduction of the abductive formal theory construction (AFTC) framework provides a clear and promising pathway forward for using empirical research to inform the development and testing of formal theories in psychopathology and psychology more broadly.

Estimating Finite Mixtures of Ordinal Graphical Models

Kevin H. Lee et al.

Summary: Researchers introduced finite mixture of ordinal graphical models to study the heterogeneous conditional dependence relationships of ordinal data in psychological science. By developing a penalized likelihood approach and designing a generalized EM algorithm, the significant computational challenges were effectively addressed, demonstrating good performance in simulation studies and real applications.

A mixture model for ordinal variables measured on semantic differential scales

Marica Manisera et al.

Summary: Subjective perceptions and attitudes are often measured using questionnaires with ordered response scales, such as semantic differential scales. This study proposes a new model called CUM (Combination of discrete Uniform and shifted Binomial random variables) to model ordinal variables measured on semantic differential scales. The model is also applicable to other rating scales with a middle option for indifference. Parameter estimation is conducted using the expectation-maximization algorithm, and the parameters are represented in a triangular space with a ternary plot. The study includes simulation and analysis of real data to demonstrate the limitations and potential of the proposed model.

Psychological networks in clinical populations: investigating the consequences of Berkson's bias

Jill de Ron et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of Berkson's bias on Gaussian Graphical Model and Ising Model, finding that higher cut-off values result in worse recovery of network structure and selection reduces recovery rates. Berkson's bias is identified as a significant and underappreciated issue in the clinical network literature.
