Kojic acid, produced by different types of fungi, has great potential for industrial application. In this study, the fungus Aspergillus sp. isolated from the leaves of Hancornia speciosa was found to yield a kojic acid-rich ethyl acetate extract, which exhibited potent antioxidant activity.
Kojic acid is produced by different types of fungi such as Apergillus sp. It has great potential for industrial application, being found in the cosmetic and health industries. The fungus Aspergillus sp. isolated from the leaves of Hancornia speciosa was grown in liquid medium PDB yielding kojic acid-rich ethyl acetate extract. Analysis of H-1 and C-13 NMR of the ethyl acetate extract showed the metabolite kojic acid as the main compound, and it was quantified by HPLC-UV. The kojic acid-rich ethyl acetate extract exhibited potent Nitric Oxide (NO) scavenging activity in vitro (antioxidant activity), showing the biotechnologic potential of fungus Aspergillus sp.
