Drone-based large-scale particle image velocimetry applied to tidal stream energy resource assessment

Iain Fairley et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the performance of drone-based large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) for tidal stream resource assessment at three sites. The results show that under favorable environmental conditions, this technique provides satisfactory accuracy for first-order tidal resource assessments.

A review of the UK and British Channel Islands practical tidal stream energy resource

Daniel Coles et al.

Summary: This review critically assesses the practical contribution tidal stream energy can make to the future energy mix of the UK and British Channel Islands. It provides evidence supporting a national-scale practical resource estimate and highlights the importance of economic competitiveness, environmental constraints, and whole-system cost benefits in determining the potential impact of tidal stream energy on the energy system.

Turbulent flow mapping in a high-flow tidal channel using mobile acoustic Doppler current profilers

Maricarmen Guerra et al.

Summary: In this study, instrumented mobile platforms were used to map the turbulent flows in Grand Passage, one of the Bay of Fundy's energetic tidal channels in Nova Scotia, Canada. The aim was to characterize the flow around the PLAT-I floating tidal energy platform developed by SMEC. The data collected through GPS-tracked surface drifters equipped with ADCPs and vessel-mounted ADCP transects successfully captured the spatial and temporal structure of the flow under different tidal conditions.

Surface Characterisation of Kolk-Boils within Tidal Stream Environments Using UAV Imagery

James Slingsby et al.

Summary: This study utilized UAV imagery to measure kolk-boil characteristics in the Inner Sound of the Pentland Firth, showing that distribution at the surface could be predicted based on tidal phase, with current velocity significantly influencing presence above 3.0 m/s.

Large-Scale Particle Image Velocimetry to Measure Streamflow from Videos Recorded from Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Fixed Imaging System

Wen-Cheng Liu et al.

Summary: The large-scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) captured by a UAV and a terrestrial fixed station provides an effective method for measuring river surface velocity. Under low flow conditions, the accuracy of surface velocity measurements using LSPIV from a UAV is higher than that from a terrestrial fixed station. Optimal flight heights and parameter settings can enhance the accuracy of velocity measurements.
