Piecing together the data of the US marine aquaculture puzzle

Halley E. Froehlich et al.

Summary: Aquaculture has become the main source of global seafood production, and there is potential in marine aquaculture to meet the growing demand. However, the quality and accessibility of marine aquaculture data have not been addressed. This study conducted a multi-state synthesis and comparison of marine aquaculture information in the United States, revealing data gaps and discrepancies. The recommendation is to adopt a standardized, digital, and annual data collection program for better planning, management, and research.

Modulatory Effect of Papaya Extract against Chlorpyrifos-Induced Oxidative Stress, Immune Suppression, Endocrine Disruption, and DNA Damage in Female Clarias gariepinus

Abdallah Tageldein Mansour et al.

Summary: Chlorpyrifos (CPF), widely used organophosphorus pesticide in agriculture, has been found in the aquatic environment. In this study, the effects of CPF exposure and dietary supplementation of papaya extract on the oxidative stress, immune system, sexual hormones, and DNA integrity of female African catfish were investigated. The results showed that CPF exposure caused stress, liver damage, hormonal imbalance, and DNA damage in the catfish. However, the dietary supplementation of papaya extract alleviated these negative effects and improved the physiological, immunological, and antioxidant status of the catfish.

Long-Chain Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids n-3 (n-3 LC-PUFA) as Phospholipids or Triglycerides Influence on Epinephelus marginatus Juvenile Fatty Acid Profile and Liver Morphophysiology

Paulo H. de Mello et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different lipid classes on the physiological and morphological responses of dusky groupers. The results showed that including different lipid classes in the diet can improve fish fillet quality. Additionally, the study found that DHA and EPA have an impact on the morphophysiology of dusky grouper juveniles, providing valuable insights for establishing this fish species as a produced species worldwide.

Milk Thistle (Silybum Marianum L.) as a Novel Multipurpose Crop for Agriculture in Marginal Environments: A Review

Roberto Marceddu et al.

Summary: Milk thistle is a versatile crop with reliable source of silymarin. Although there have been many studies on its bioactivity, phytochemistry, and genetics, research on its agronomy and farm opportunities is limited. However, its multiple potential uses and reduced need for external inputs make it an interesting alternative crop, especially for marginal environments.

Alleviative effects of dietary Silybum marianum and co-enzyme Q10 on waterborne nickel-induced impaired growth, immunosuppression, tissue damage, immune-related genes dysregulation, and reduced resistance to Pseudomonas aeruginosa in Oreochromis niloticus

Walaa El-Houseiny et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of dietary supplementation of Silybum marianum (SLM) and/or co-enzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) on the health of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) exposed to nickel (Ni). The results showed that SLM and/or Co-Q10 effectively alleviated the negative effects of Ni exposure, including anemia, impaired growth, organ dysfunction, immune and antioxidant depletion, reduced resistance to bacterial infection, and Ni accumulation in organs. These findings suggest that SLM and/or Co-Q10 can be beneficial dietary supplements for improving the health and growth of freshwater fish exposed to Ni.
